I found this 1901 5 lire silver coin in my father's collection.
It was in my garage for 20 years.
Can someone tell if it s fake or not from the pictures or something I could to find out?

Thanks

See if a magnet sticks to it. I learned the hard way in Peru the importance of simple tests.

Italian 5 lira coins from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are heavily faked. It's a pity as they are rather nice and I would quite like to collect them. But they are one series that I would be very very wary of.

Check the weight, too.

I have 2 pieces both non-magnetic but under the correct weight.

Parais - I believe the coin is a counterfeit (rather Forgery) made to mimic an original but the die work does NOT COME UP TO STANDARDS of the Rome mint in 1901.

Only 114 of these were minted originally - the coin is a SUPER rarity but not as a forgery. I do collect Italian Forgeries (because I could never afford the originals).

What you need to do is to study the dies of the ERA and compare the die work on a cheap original coin in high grade with any of the "rarities". No one ever gets to see a real 1901 R 5 Lira up close - but anyone can afford a decent 10 Centime or find one in dealer inventory.

Compare both coins under a good binocular microscope at 10-30 and 100 X and I believe you will see for yourself EXACTLY what is wrong. Look at the following areas - dentils, letter to field transitions, details around the ear and hairlines.
