Just yesterday I got my first slabbed coin. It's an MS63 1957 LWC with nice toning in an NGC holder. I ordered it from ebay for what I think wasn't a too outrageous $9.95 (plus $5.00 for shipping). I think it looks great. It had never really occurred to me that I would be interested in assembling a collection of slabbed coins but recently I thought that it would be cool to assemble a birth year set for myself. I set a goal of acquiring a good looking set of MS 63+ coins, preferably with a bit of toning and I plan to take my time pulling it together. I hope to add to my tiny (so far) collection by making purchases primarily at coin shows but ebay did offer a quick way to get started. What do you think would be the best, most satisfactory, way to store/display slabbed coins? Thanks. Bob Edited by NJ Bob 12/04/2012 6:04 pm

Theres a couple ways you can go with slabbed coins. PCGS and NGC make boxes that are good that store 20 of them at a time and dont take up much space. My personal favorite though is the Lighthouse certified coin binders, the largest can hold 54 I believe and they have pages you put the slabs in where each holds 9 slabs. They take up more room then a traditional album but they arent that big and you can easily view large amounts of the collection at 1 time. http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/home.php?cat=330You could also just buy the pages and put them in whatever 3 ring binder you want

I'm glad I read this post. Thanks basebal21. I was currently using a PCGS box but those sheets and album look like a nice way to actually see the coins.

Im glad it was helpful, I had the boxes myself at first until they were pointed out to me. I do like the boxes but after trying the album I've switched to them, I love to be able to see them all at once.

Do you use the slab protectors that Wizard sells for $1.19 per 100? I didn't want to order just those but now my order would be large enough if I include an album.

I'd looked around but hadn't found this particular type of storage page. It looks good and I like the idea of having color options for the binder/slipcase.
Thanks basebal21.

TPG I personally dont use the protectors I'm not sure if others do or not though. If you do get them let me know how they are. Bob I like the color options too, makes it real easy to know whats in what

Too bad the albums are out of stock. I have asked to be notified when they come in. The pages are all out as well.

Amazon and some other places have the albums as well, not sure how great the prices would be but last time I checked Amazon did not have the albums that can hold 54

If your going to keep slabbed coins I suggest just using those boxes for them. Displaying anything that resembles anything of value is just not smart.

Thanks just carl.
I understand what you're saying and if I were going to invest in high value coins I would do exactly what you're saying but I'm planning to assemble a small set simply for the joy of it and I want to be able to enjoy my collection. I think an album would work better for me.

Its more where you store and your personal situation with visitors than how imo. Both the box and albums will alert people to it if you have it in the open and have people over often. If you dont have people over its less of a worry. Basically same logic with safes, people only know its there if you have it somewhere it can been seen

I just ordered a wooden display case for my Australian Koalas in air-tites but they also make boxes that fit TPG slabbed coins. They look great for a presentation piece, but of course they cost quite a bit and don't hold nearly as many. I haven't received my order yet but I have seen similar pieces before and am pretty confident in what I am getting will look great as a centerpiece display item. http://www.air-tites.com/Air-Tite_W...in_Cases.htm

I like the Eagle brand holders. They have pages that hold 9 slabbed coins, 12 2x2's, 4 mint sets, or 4 proof sets. You can buy individual pages and they fit in any 3 ring binder. They are available directly from the manufacturer: http://www.eaglecoinholders.comI mostly use the mint set and proof set pages, but I have a few slabbed items that I also need to display. Here is an example page: http://www.colp.info/coins/pages/M01.htmThe bottom right corner has a normal slabbed coin. I was also able to modify the top 2 slots at left and right to accommodate the 1966 and 1967 Special Mint Sets. Standard 3 hole format is a big plus!

The Air-Tites holders look really good but a little pricy. The holders would be more valuable the many of my coins. I'd never seen the Eagle albums before. I never thought about putting my proof sets into an album but now I might want to do that someday. The down side would be what to do with envelopes and boxes; can't lose those.
