I do a lot of lot of penny roll searching and have been finding quite a bit of coins that coins that coin be graded between AU and MS and have been setting these coins aside as collectible worthy and have been wondering if my approach is valid?

I have been going through rolls for about 6 months now. I sort out 1982 and older in less than AU and put in jars to keep. I then sort the wheats and put them in air tite tubes. I put all the AU or low MS(1982 or older) in tubes as well and lastly I put all the MS 63+ stuff from 1982 and older in flips.

I've started collecting more coins near MS condition than I used to. I doubt most will be worth a few times face/melt + inflation for several generations, but historical preservation is a facet of numismatics that I didn't appreciate enough when I was younger.

As an example, the 1893 Columbian half dollar STILL isn't worth much more than melt, but if you put it in a display along with some of the US postage stamps issued at the same time, you get a nice picture of American thoughts at the time. (The black stamp with the a reverse of the identical portrait is worth about $2,000!) We don't value our past enough any more, I couldn't imagine Columbus being placed on US coinage these days.

Some coin collectors take a purely investment approach to coins, but high quality examples, if preserved, may serve many future generations as interesting reminders of our culture's views in time. Keep the good ones!

I only save "higher" grade MS examples. If you continue to save AU coins, you'll soon be buried. I recommend you only keep nice, high grade memorial cents.

Agreed with Badthad...I think when everyone starts they get buried. I kept everything when I first started. I now keep probably 1% of what I used to keep. Happy Hunting

I think your approach is valid, I do much the same, but have tightened my standards as I started filling tubes and storing them.
