The design on the Walking Liberty half-dollar is my favorite of all U.S. coins. I'm new to coin collecting, and I just recently found out about the dollar coins bearing the same design. I found one on Amazon, but I know nothing about grading services or how to shop for a coin online. I was hoping you guys could help. Here is a link to what I'm looking at:

Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks!

It's a very popular design. The Walking Liberty half dollar is a classic series, completely separate from the modern silver bullion coins bearing the same design. Those coins have almost no numismatic value, but are 1oz of silver with a pretty design.

I believe you can get a better deal on these coins on ebay. They are selling all the time for just over the spot price of silver. The ad you sent on Amazon is charging a big premium for the slab (and not even one of the top grading services.) The top 4 grading services are PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. These have a strong reputation and stand behind their grades. When buying more expensive coins, I would recommend getting them slabbed by one of these companies. For a modern 1986 Silver Eagle, I'm sure you can find a nice one on ebay with free shipping at a good price without the holder.

One of these could probably be had raw on ebay for around $40ish. The one on Amazon is overpriced and since it is slabbed by a basement service, it is no better than buying it raw. The 4 certification services listed by coins4fun are all reputable.

Agreed with everyone else. Amazon is alright for buying certain coin things, but overall is overpriced when it comes to coins and has a lot of those no name slabbers where the grade means nothing

Also, added to all said above, 1986 is the first year of the Silver Eagles. The old adage of " always collect the bookends " of any series, causes the 1986 ASE's to sell at a small ( sometimes large ) premium. As well as the 1996 which is the lowest mintage of the business strike Eagles, 4 million plus but still the lowest and people are willing to pay a premium for these coins also.

If you just love the design of the coin and not a particular year, then nice ones can be had on ebay and other bullion dealers for spot plus a small profit plus shipping.

I have one of those in the nifty little purple box with the certificate from the mint. Mine is a proof and has started to tone around the edges. I gave $40 for mine 3 years ago. It is a beautiful design. I feel the ASE's are an ideal series to collect simply because they are mostly inexpensive, safe a few odd balls, and they simply look great. I had a piece I bought off a guy at a gas station I carried around in my pocket for years as a conversation piece. I eventually plopped it into the fish aquarium and it has been there since. Hmm, think I'll dig it out and carry it around again. It was great to get peoples attention and get them talking about coins.
