1877 S But with a rim ding on the obverse. The ding does not go all the way across the coin and is not visible on the reverse. Questions: - If I send this coin to a TPG, how will the ding affect its grade? Will I get a "damaged" grade? - I guess it's in VF condition. Ya'll agree?

Congratulations on your most recent acquisition. I'm not an expert on counterfeits, but the surfaces have an uneven look and I would not give an uncertified coin like this the benefit of the doubt. Assuming that the coin is authentic, it would probably grade VG Details as you mentioned the rim ding, and also some surface damage are detracting. I would not send it in to a TPG just because of the cost benefit analysis ($40+ to submit, like $20 to ANACS) but you could take it in to a numismatic professional and make sure it's authentic (there were a lot of Chinese counterfeits made.)

that it could be a counterfeit... How much does it weigh and have you tested it using a magnet?

It weighs 27.0 grams and is exactly the same size as various other Morgans I have. It's not magnetic. It came in an old, faded paper flip. This coin had been in someone's collection for a very long time.
I guess I'm not worried about whether it's fake or not...

If it is authentic & you sent it in... If I send this coin to a TPG, how will the ding affect its grade? Will I get a "damaged" grade? MOST LIKELY - I guess it's in VF condition. Ya'll agree? YES

Do your research...but the coin looks like one I have....Can't see any thing wrong yet....Grades at about vf-25 in my opinion....Bet it would come back from grading as genuine ,,,or,,,details damage

Yup. It'll might come back as 'damaged', but it also will come back as authenticated or not. And with the oft-coumterfeited Trade dollars, a TPG's opinion matters to many.

I hate to say it but this is one of the times I would only purchase the coin in a slab. For resale purposes, a slab for a trade $ is a very wise investment.
I am curious, why are you thinking about having slabbed?

I have no expertise in this often counterfeited series ... but do note that the coin (if genuine) grades IMHO in the VF range.

I am curious, why are you thinking about having slabbed? My wife bought the coin, and at first - thinking she'd made a very good buy - it seemed like getting it slabbed might help me decide whether to sell or keep it. But a few minutes ago she told me what she paid for it. Ugh. I now can't afford to get it slabbed, and I don't want to keep it either. So I'm gonna put it on ebay and see what happens.

Rim dings generally are not considered when the coin is graded by the grading services unless it is very severe. I have an 1858-O Liberty Seated half dollar graded AU-58 by PCGS and when I cracked it out to put in my 7070 album I found it had four minor rim dings. Both PCGS and NGC on their web sites on the page outlining their grading criteria specifically state minor rim dings do not affect the grading of the details of the coin and apparently are not considered post mint damage. If you send your coin in to be authenticated and you should if you bought it "raw" it is likely the ding on your coin won't be an issue. Ed ANA LM-3175

Do you mind revealing what she paid? ebay might not be wise with the fees and all, unless you got it at low enough of a price to resell on there.

Lobby: It might be worth your time to look at Numismedia for a hint of what the coin might be worth. If this site is any where near accurate in comparision to the market you wife paid approximately what they say a G4 coin is worth. So if it is a VF25 coin, and it is graded as such that could be a win on two levels. One the coin is certified as a genuine coin and its value goes up three fold.
In my opinion, and again I am no expert, your wife did very good.
Personally, if it was me I'd hang onto the coin unless I could do better later on.
Good luck.

If genuine, which I am not doubting, I think $60 is a great deal. It's tought to get Trade dollars at that price, especially in that grade.
