This is the third coin I picked up, it is by far my favorite one.
It's not Byzantine, but was struck around that time...

The Venetain grosse was introduced in 1192..AD.. by Doge Dondolo and was the rising economic power of Venice.
Venice effectively co-opted the fourth Crusade for there own proposes. This coin remained the premier trade coin, of the Mediterranean for hundreds of years and remained amazingly constant size, appearance and purity. The coin was copied far and wide by Bulgaria, Serbia, and other Medieval states.
A fascinating coin that is Contemporary with the Byzantine Empire.

Venice Raineri Zeno
1253-1268..AD.
AR..Grosso.
Ob.Raceno sm Veneti doge
(miltary leader) on the left, St. Mark on right, banner between.
Rev. Ic- Xc Christ enthroned, holding book of Gosples...
22mm x 2.17g..

Notice the doubling on the Ob.lettering on the left ..

Absolutely gorgeous . Nice background, and a fine example of the coin. It has amazing detail and a gorgeous surface. Kudos to you. You have great taste in coins. Its so amazing how the once mighty Roman Empire, broke in half and then one half shattered into a thousand kingdoms and the other half swelled and shrunk as the world became smaller. Wonderful.

Beautiful coin, one I would love to have. It's interesting how they copied the style of Byzantine coinage of the time keeping the Greek legend for Christ, but than adding the Latin legend to ID the Doge showing it as not a coin of the Byzantine empire but a seperate nation.

I picked up something similar from a junk box of unidentified oddball coins, but that was more than 20 years ago.
