Super-excited I finally got one of my dream coins (any Ostrogothic coin) . This one might as well have cost me my arm and leg; the most I've paid for any coin. But I justify it by making it my Christmas/graduation gift, and its well worth it. This is the coin I referred to back in the other thread.

Just a bit of the background of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy:
After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD, Italy fell under the complete control of the barbarians. First came Odoacer, then the Ostrogoths took over and Theodoric became master of Italy. His reign was the most prosperous period for Italy since the late 4th century, and he was held in high regard, not only by the Ostrogoths but by his Roman subjects as well. Then came the insignificant reign of his grandson, Athalaric, who took the throne when Theodoric died. Then, in 534 AD, Theodahad became king, and it was during his regency that the Byzantines under Justinian I invaded Italy to regain it for the empire, starting the Gothic War. He was executed under orders of Witiges after only 2 years as king.

Fantastic coin and the first one that I have seen of this ruler. This had to be very expensive. Would you care to share what you paid for it?

ValiantKnight: What you have shown, for me, is a very significant coin. I have been looking for some years for post Roman coins of Europe, and that piece would sit very nicely in my collection.

Coins of the Dark Ages of Western Europe are always difficult to obtain.
With such coins, you are really competing against the museums, and consideration should be given to bequesting them to a museum when you die.

Shelled out $220 for it, so I'm basically not going to be able to buy anything for a while But like I said, it was worth it

No, from somewhere else. But if he sells Germanic coinage, then I wouldn't mind taking a look at his inventory (when my coffers replenish of course )

Yup this coin is definitely in the top five of my collection (when I finally have it in hand)

Great work Jango, loving the coin and the post. Have one of these , one of these , and one of these

These later coins are well worth 'reading-up' on.

I agree, the coins and the era itself are fascinating

Update: just received the coin in the mail and aside from it being a little darker in hand it's exactly as shown in the pics, in all of its Dark Ages glory It's now my most valuable coin and probably my rarest as well. An all-around great coin in hand
