Earlier today I tried cleaning two coins with acetone soak + toothpick. On one coin (1877 Seated Lib Qtr) I was fairly pleased with the results. I soaked this Barber as well because of a gunky black spot on the reverse. The gunk came off but underneath the coin is discolored.

I know there is controversy about any type of cleaning but being a curious newbie I had to try it myself on a couple of coins.

These are the 'after' pics. I included two reverse shots because the discoloration is more prominent under certain lighting conditions (second picture). And in that second reverse pic I swear the eagle is looking at me saying "WHAT. DID. YOU. DO. TO. ME!"

What do you think about this coin grade, the treatment, and the remaining discoloration?

A bath is one thing....a toothpick is an entirely new avenue.

Y'know, I guess the acetone didn't do much of anything for the discolorations on this coin. I grabbed it hastily when I decided to clean the 1877 Seated Qtr. I just looked at the 'before' pics I took yesterday... no significant difference, that copper-colored stain was there before treatment and the black looks about the same throughout.

As for the toothpick, I gently poked at the black stuff, didn't do much on this coin as you can see.

(lighting conditions were different for yesterday's pic)

2-3 minutes. But in looking at the before pic again and thinking how the splotch surface felt when I probed it with the toothpick, most of the staining on this coin is not surface gunk amenable to soaking off-- it's a change in the surface layers of the metal.

I am one of the purists: STOP THIS MADNESS NOW!

But I digress. You seem to be having so much fun with this and learning (plus sharing unabashedly your lessons) I think it is a good thing. Just make sure that you are not learning on something that would really suffer from a cleaning.

Back to regular programming: STOP THIS MADNESS NOW!
