I'm a huge fan of commemoratives and I found the story of the so-called dollar interesting as it is the natural progenitor of the U.S. commemorative coin program. Hubert Walker and I wrote a three piece article talking about different facets of the So-Called Dollar series with the first two parts focusing on SCDs as they relate to commemorative coins. The first part is today's feature at CoinWeek:

As an aside, can CCF users NickelSearcher and Commems get in touch with me through PM, I have a project that could use your counsel.

Really interesting! Thanks! It appears that the humble Columbian half dollar started it all. I have a bunch of them, and it was what got me into commemoratives in the the first place. I think those times were really interesting. There was a feeling of expansion in the air, and those coins and "so-called dollars" reflected it.

What a great article with interesting examples. I have one "so called dollar" from the 1933 worlds fair.

I really like the "use silver to restore prosperity" statement.

Very good article.

Of course, I have to point out that the Flip of a Coin section mentions the Eisenhower dollar.
