Hi all, I'm new in here and it looks like a great site, once I learn how to move around lol. on the full steps I know that it's 5 on the older ones but do you count the top platform as a step, I thought not but pcgs has a ms67 full step and the bottom was rolled up thanks

Good Question I believe you can count 4 steps as well as 4 1/2 steps as well, but I am not all that clear on it myself I am sure someone will be able to give you a better answer.

Oops Sorry where are my manners Welcome to the greatest forum

I don't think I have ever seen a real full steps Jefferson. They sure do wear fast and are very hard to see.

Jefferson nickels have 6 steps ,, they are counted from the top to the bottom, this includes the top step or better the risers of the steps ,,since the view of montecello is from the front the treads are not visable .

the sixth step is often the weakest , and thus the addition of five steps as a designation , and 5.5 also if the bottom step is only partially struck.

the half step and sixth step based on the direction of counting can only apply to the sixth step or bottom step.

It is not a matter of coin wear, it is due to strike quality. Nickel is the hardest coining metal the US Mint uses for business strikes so it is difficult to fully strike a nickel. As the die wears(or strike pressure is a little light), the fine step detail is the first to disappear. Think of full steps like full bell lines on Franklin half dollars.
