Hi Susan,
How is this education/search going? Haven't heard much about it of late. This may belong in the British section, since that is the only type of hammered coin I've noted you to have an interest in, but when you've written of your interests, you've written hammered coins without specifying further.

It's British. Haven't been able to do much with it lately. I'm still very interested in them and want to start a collection, but haven't found what I'm looking for in my price range.

Tudor was one of the areas you were interested in but they don't always come cheap. One thing you could do with Tudor coins is collect one from each monarch. Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. That could make a nice set a bit cheaper than say fiocusing on just one denomination and trying to collect all of them. I know of one collector that was trying to get a portrait of each Tudor monarch on a coin.

A cheaper field to work in to build up a feel for English hammered is Edward I pennies, millions and billions of them out there. Running through about 12 or so classes (.e types/designs) with many subclasses, eg. 10A, 10B

You could try and get one from each class and it's subclasses. Or maybe one from each mint?

Well it's a idea.

I think I'm going to start with a Tudor monarch set. I want nice, sharp portraits though, so that just makes it a lot more expensive. Since my interest in these coins was sparked by my interest in the history, I'm more interested in the appearance of the coin rather than the denomination.

It's a good approach and a fulfiling one at that. Eeven if it costs a bit, it'll be well worth it in the end! :)
