I have a new favorite find to report, and this may be my most valuable single coin find. I was going through a box of dimes. I was just edge searching as I usually do with dimes but I noticed a coin that didn't have any ridges/reeds so I checked it. To my surprise I saw U. S. of A. on the obverse and then 1881. Flipped it over and saw the III. I figured it to be a 3 cent coin but to be honest, I wasn't certain what it was until I looked in the Red Book. I had no idea it was the same size a dime. I'm glad it is! OO

Thanks everybody! The coin looks better in hand than the picture. I believe the dark spots are actually dirt but I don't want to mess with it too much. It looks like a couple of small die breaks on the reverse near the rim at 1 and 3:30. I assume this was fairly common with this coin.
John, I lack the skills to say whether or not it's been cleaned. I can tell you that in hand, I see no signs of it, but that doesn't mean much.

From what I understand die cracks and clashes are common on these. Looks ok so don't try cleaning it. Congrats on your find. John1

I noticed the die clashes were common. I was kind of hoping mine had one, just because I think the one's I saw on ebay look neat. It really shows up well on the reverse, with all the flat surface around the III. OO
