I recently purchased this 1914 Shih Kai Dollar from the Czech Republic and would be interested in any further information from experts in Chinese coins. Firstly, it is the more desirable triangle version. Secondly, and what makes it more rare is that it's the Bold Leaves variety. If you look at the grain wreath the leaves have more detail and splits in each leaf. Furthermore, the stems of grain wreath at the base of the coin have deep lines/splits running across the stems.

Nice one, marbury. Where in the CR did you get it?

This is a very faked coin. In China every man and his dog is selling these.

I thought the same as Augsburger ( do you come from that once very important silver trading center?) I have purchased from Eastern Europe but only when I know exactly what I am buying Eastern Europe seems to be a source of counterfeit coins.

IMHO, I don't think it is fake but the "triangle" version is not a rare variety, it is only just a bit rarer than the common type. Doubtless, your coin is very high grade, marbury. I have one for your comparison.

The "triangle" variety refers to the Chinese script shown in the following pictures.

My coin weights 26.75 grams and 39.2-39.3mm in diameter.

wonghinghi Could you possibly send larger clearer pictures of the reeds. They seem to be split top at some places - but it could be lighting and the way my PC enlarges your pictures.

Not understand what you are talking about, swamperbob. Could you point it out by arrows if you find any problems?

I'm no pro, but I was reading about "Fat Man" Chinese dollars last night. They're pretty common, tons of them were minted in the early 1900's. I don't think it's a fake. Looks like a nice coin, I'd like to get one some day soon.

I bought it from AUREA Numismatika s.r.o but none of my coins arrived and have been waiting for a refund ever since! I understand that the triangle isn't that much rarer but the bold leaves is, so it was the conbination of both I was referring to. Not that it makes any difference as I never got my coins anyway......not happy.
