Did anyone notice the two little spikes halfway along the rim of the cap? These are called dragons teeth and were introduced to help stop counterfeits. Those faking these coins had trouble replicating the dragons teeth.

This is my first time to know there are two dragon teeth beneath the liberty cap.
I check all my eagle dollars for the dragon teeth.
Coins without dragon teeth: Zs 1874 JA Pi 1876 MH Ga 1877 IC Go 1882 SB Cn 1886 AM
Coins with dragon teeth: Mo 1877 MH As 1888 ML Ca 1889 MM Go 1891 RS Mo 1896 AM
I am confident that my coins are genuine so I think the dragon teeth are not the substantial design for the eagle dollars. If anyone find a contradiction in my findings, I will show the pictures of the concerned coin here.

marbury518 - Do you know how to get in touch with the author of the website you listed?
He has a counterfeit listed as an original and I wanted to discuss it with him.

I had heard of dragons teeth before, but never knew what was meant until now.
Thanks for the valuable information.

Sorry no idea about the contact info. I have been told by a well known Canadian dealer that my Reales should slab MS65 and MS63, so fingers crossed.

Dreadful NGC results, couldn't believe it. One came back AU58, the other MS62.

I have lost a great deal of respect for NGC over the past three weeks.
I do not think you get much of anything for your money.

You may know George Manz, very well respected numismatist and graded these way higher and he's usually spot on...PCGS shout from the rooftops about the value of the package so I get hit with large customs charges...an expensive game sending coins for grading.

Swamperbob Quote: Do you know how to get in touch with the author of the website you listed? That page has been up for several years, I have referenced it occasionally in the past when looking at pictures of 8 Reales. The person might be done selling them because there used to be a list of the available coins near the bottom but it is no longer there. Quote: I have lost a great deal of respect for NGC over the past three weeks. I'd like to hear any experiences you had with NGC if possible swamperbob. This is one the of the grading companies I had planned on sending some pieces to be slabbed in the future.

I have posted some of the problems lately on a few threads. But recently I have seen three counterfeits in NGC slabs all recently graded and some of the grades returned to the shop on coins I had authenticated raw are ludicrous. Most are over graded including several AU coins that made MS grades. And a couple that came back much lower than expected. The lack of objective consistency or possibly the lack of adequate overall review controls is bad right now. At one point ANACS was good - then really bad - then fair and now pretty good. Stability of grading over time is essential. That is simply NOT happening. The longer you look the worse it seems to get. I blame it on competition and the search for more profit - one or both. It seems to have gone downhill since they stopped taking the fees when cleaned coins appeared. I think they made a lot of money by taking those fees and doing nothing. Now they are forced to take longer and spend more. Not sure just a presumption because the deterioration seems to be after the conversion. Of course it would be nice if there was a list of the employees and their qualifications - to check churn - but they will never do that it would kill their business which is still BOOMING. TPG companies are the second worst thing to happen to Numismatics and the worst since the Sheldon scale began being used across the board. Just an old coot showing my age.

If you go for express and pay a premium I have found that becuase a signature is required and no authorised signatory is there (often the case) a note is left and redelivered some time later. Often not too long but a delay nevertheless. Then once arrived it may sit for two days before it makes it to received on the system and then a week to get graded for a 48hr service. The counter argument offered is 'more haste less quality of service.' As a Brit all my peers think I'm odd getting anything graded and even more odd sending it to the States. Sending Canadian decimals to ICCS you know they are very strict/conservative but you know what you are going to get pretty much. However, Lisa in customer services at NGC is always a joy to chat with and I'd definately ask her on a date if I lived in FL!
