I see that a lot of coin owners/dealers tout toning and that a rainbow-ish hue seems prized. I see it most often with Morgans.

Question: can't that be created? I dabble in making jewelry and liver of sulfur is used to create those rainbow hues on silver. What's to stop people from just giving their coins a quick dip in a hot liver of sulfur bath to create this toning?

Edited to add: My own experience with LOS in the jewelry realm is that the results are unpredictable. Maybe that's a deterrent for would-be coin toners. Seems like the uneven wear and existing film/debris would cause unpleasing results.

Most artificial toning can easily be spotted. I have seen coins 'cooked' in a bath of matchheads and prell. The colors that appear are mostly blue and magenta. When these coins are compared against 'real' toned coins, they are easy to spot. The TPG's can also spot them.

Just like dipping, you can artificially tone a coin - if you're good at it - and nobody will ever be able to tell the difference. But again, like dipping, if you can't tell it was done, it wasn't done.

There are no absolutes in coin collecting.

I don't doubt that there have been coins artificially toned that have fooled folks and made it into a PCGS or NGC holder in the past and, similarly, do not doubt that it might be done in the future, too. However, a great number of those raw coins out there that claim to be wildly and naturally toned really look as though someone did it intentionally. Also, I believe PCGS and NGC, though fooled at times, typically do an excellent job of rejecting artificially toned coins. Be careful out there.
