I actually emailed him yesterday telling him it was a 1917 quarter. His response: Quote:Thanks for your comments. I agree that the shield is suspicious for a 1917 coin. The single hair strand looks right though. I can't explain the 1916 date. My daughter saw it, too. I may need to get it slabbed by NGC or PCGS. I showed it to Tom Hallenbeck (current ANA President) a number of years ago and he was uncommitted as to the date. If I sell it, it comes with a full money back guarantee- i.e. if it slabs as other than a genuine 1916 Standing Liberty quarter. It is 100% not a 1916. I'm surprised if the ANA President actually couldn't decipher this. All characteristics about this one are wrong, except the single hair strand. But the shield rivets are too strong, the bottom of the drapery is too wide, the wall lines are much too visible, and the robe under the right arm points to it being a 1917. Edit: accidentally said the shield is weak, but meant to say the rivets on the one on ebay are strong.

I'd rather just buy a slabbed one vs taking chances

Diagnostics all point to 1917.
Also, there appears to be traces of a second hair curl above the main on his coin in the magnified obverse head photo.

Horrible photo selection for what is advertised as a valuable coin. Sellers other ebay item is a shoe. I do not have the technical expertise in this series to offer an opinion on authenticity ... but suggest Moe that you listen to the folks above who do have an opinion. David

My goal is to eventually buy a raw 1916 on ebay for cheap in a dateless lot. I check all dateless lots. I'm sure someone will beat me to it though, since I don't check every day. I see lots of these dateless ones being advertised as a 1916, I think the seller knows it isn't. He didn't take it down even when I showed him a comparison photo proving it was a 1917. All well. I don't think anyone will be dumb enough to buy it.

Quote: but suggest Moe that you listen to the folks above who do have an opinion. , but I wasn't looking to buy a 1916 Standing Liberty quarter. I've already got one! (Thank you Johnny "Countdown", the 1916 Standing quarter Whisperer!!)

Beautiful! Is that one of the ones he got at melt value? I'm trying to follow his footsteps! I think I'm starting to like the dateless ones more than ones with a date.

On Moe's example, look how the drapery is long and touches the foot. The ebay example (1917) is rounded and stubby. This clown has to be reported.

Quote: Is that one of the ones he got at melt value? Yep! He's pretty dang good at finding those! Quote: I think I'm starting to like the dateless ones more than ones with a date. I like the PRICE of the dateless ones better than the dated ones!

I'm pretty good at searching for them, just haven't found any yet. Must be pretty hard to be the first one to spot it to bring it home.
And yes, the price is definitely a plus!

Update: (My received answer back from seller) Quote: Dear moe145,
Thanks for your interest and information provided. In the future, I will probably get high dollar coins "slabbed". When I first started coin collecting, there were no grading services but as you are probably aware, they can make mistakes, too. My original Message to him: Quote:From: moe145 To: dowmark Subject: Other: moe145 sent a message about 1916, Standing Liberty quarter with just barely visible date # 261137519831Sent Date: Dec-10-12 15:22:16 PST Dear dowmark, FYI, your coin you have listed as a 1916 Standing Liberty quarter is a 1917. The diagnostics of the shield rivets, the robe folds, and the incuse wall design all confirm the date being 1917. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Cheers! Moe
