Canadian Silver Dollars did not contain any silver in 1981. The last year that they were issued for circulation with silver was 1967. After that, the only time they were made with silver were in proof sets. Instead, they substituted it with nickel. $12 each, is a pretty high price!

Thanks for that Samsnate, I think it falls under this. It looks like spot for this coin. The guy has no COA or box, just the mint sleeve, not even sure what that means yet.
1 Dollar (Various - Nickel versions exist) 1971-1991 0.500 0.3750 ♦ $12.40500

Bring a mag with ya then or google to see if you can find a differance in size between the silver ones and the Nickel...a few times I've had commems....there was a 2mm differeance. At least under spot. If they are silver, and you are interested, offer him 10. On another note Peanut.....having a problem with KITC right now. If you contact that guy and he is willing to sell at a good price....grab one for me. $40 or less ple ASE

Hi Canada has issued a commemorative silver dollar every year since 1971,(all of these coins are 36mm in diameter), if your coin is 32mm in diameter, it is a common nickel dollar which contains no silver, however they are very fun to collect. from 1971-1991 they were 50% silver (0.375oz of silver) and from 1992-2002 they were 92.5% silver, (0.75oz of silver) and from 2003-2006 they were 99.9% silver (0.81oz of silver), and from 2007 to the present they have been 92.5% again with occasional additional issues in 99.9%. I often buy the 50% pure variety for under spot, they are great designs and have close to no premium over silver price. hope it helps
