I visited my LCS yesterday to pick up a few supplies and a silver dime for my album. The owner has been there for 30+ years and through many conversations I've learned a bit but also realize that he knows a lot from doing what he is doing. I also know he is not a fan of silver bullion. Thinks that silver is not going to go up really and doesn't really want a part of it.
A guy came in wanting to authenticate a coin and see what its value was. I'm on the sidelines so I'm not sure what coin it was. The owner took a look at it and recognized the coin. While looking at it he pointed out what was right and a concern he had about the denticle locations. He then told the guy that if you bounce it on the table it makes a particular sound that will tell you if its silver. So he bounced it a few times and said to the guy..."Yep that sounds right" NO IT DIDNT! NOT AT ALL! I obviously never say anything to undermine his credibility, but really? How does he not know the sound? I'm not a seasoned vet but with the amount I have roll hunted and been buying silver....I know that sound! I was just really surprised that he didnt. CHEERS!

That's an odd tale. Sounds like a great place to buy silver. Poor old fool.

Oh sorry I do need to add....He then put it on a scale and it was way off. It was .4g off on what was to be something like a 5.2g coin Told the guy fake. That was the odd part...he knows what years are silver and to do an all but didnt know the sound.

He bounced it off the counter to see if it was silver? No wonder the guy doesn't like to buy silver. Usually you can tell silver by the color of the coin, ringing it with another coin and the odor it has. That's why many bullion buyers refer to junk silver coins as "stink".

@CoinAddict -- "Poor old fool" ? Good one. He may (as seems obvious) be losing his hearing and he may (as you say) be a "poor old fool" but he has owned the coin shop for over 30 years...
Having owned a coin shop for over 30 years isn't something that can be said about too many of us.

So do you believe the coin was a fake of a silver coin or it was a legitimate coin that just happened to not be silver?
Obviously if its the former its a big deal, if the latter, not so much. I think the intention is key.

From what I overheard, The coin was supposed to made of silver. So as soon as he did the drop test...I knew it was no good and the weighing sealed the deal.

Maybe the coin dealer knew it wasnt silver and wanted the guy to beat it. Someone goes and buys stuff elsewhere and then comes to me and wants free advice on if its real or not? Yup its silver buddy, good luck and see ya later.

Thats a pretty quick way to drive business away, sadly some dealers do use that approach

I dont this is the case here. The owner spent s good amount of time looking the coin up and down. If he wanted the guy gone he would have just said whatever and let the guy go on his way. Feel bad for the guy that bought it thinking it was real to find out its a fake. The owner is a pretty straight shooter, though it took a bit for him to warm up to me. Finally actually hold a conversation with me vs the first dozen times I was in there where it was just a quick answer and thats it.
