1924-S Standing Lib Quarter: Barely Readable Date

Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6416 Posts	Posted 12/10/2012 11:16 pm As is common for pre-1925 SLQs, this one has has almost lost its date, even though the overall detail seems to be about F-12 or so. How would you all grade a coin like this? Is there a consensus about balancing the date detail and the rest of the coin to come up with a numerical grade? The discoloration on the high points has resisted an acetone bath so I think I'm stuck with it, unless someone has a good suggestion. All opinions and advice are welcome! D0ubl3Eagle Pillar of the Community United States 5854 Posts	Posted 12/11/2012 8:11 pm Looking at some of the coins over on Heritage, it seems like the TPG's are a bit inconsistent. A few examples which only have one digit visible but details approaching VF are graded G-6 while others with much more wear are given VG/F grades. When one one digit is visible, I have generally graded these VG-8 or less with the overall details a factor in the final grade. While the obverse may make a F the reverse seems a bit more worn. The date while weak does have 3 digits visible. I think it may grade VG-8 details. Was this coin pulled out of a melt bin or lot? It would be a nice find it was. Report this Post to the Staff

Almost all coins in this bin are 1925-1930 coins in G-VG grade, pre-sorted to remove '27-S and (usually) '27-D. Occasionally a partial date early piece shows up like this one. I have a potential '23-S from this bin which I will (someday) send to ANACS to see if they will slab it. The shop also has Walkers, Mercs, and Barbers in bins. Trolling through these for goodies is one of my many guilty pleasures! Report this Post to the Staff
