I have came across a lighter 1966 quarter. It weighs 5.2-5.3 grams. Included are pictures with a silver and clad quarter for comparison.I would also like to note it is non-reactive to a magnet. Has ALL of the nickel simply rusted off? What's going on here?

Looks like a real coin to me.

It is a dug coin. Found with a metal detector. It most likely buried in the ground for many years.

Why the out there weight then? It is the same size, or larger (thicker) than the clad coin I weighed. I am not doubting you, simply wondering the mechanics of this. It appears to be a less dense material from what I have determined, however, I have not done a specific gravity testing.

Perhaps someone plated one in copper and it acquired a patina through circulation.

Your coin has severe environmental damage, most likely from being buried for a time. Nickel does not rust but the CuNi alloy tends to turn brown in some types of soil. The surfaces are pitted which would account for some weight loss and you cannot measure a coin by the thickness of the rim since it is variable and not a defined standard.

I would agree with the suggestion that it was likely burried for a long time.
Looks pretty cool though.. I would hang on to it.
Rest in Peace

Looks just like the one I picked up by the side of the road. I suspect mine was well-bathed in salt mix for a few years before I found it.

Thank you for all the lightning fast replies. I will likely keep it for whatever reason, especially seeing as how it didn't even cost me anything to come across it.

Good call. Education is a good reason. You can use it to teach others, or remind yourself of this learning experience.
