I started in the late 80's. I received a couple of Mercury dimes and a 1900 O Morgan. I have been collecting ever since and still own that 1900 O Morgan. It looks like its been through the war, but I could never bring myself to part with it.

I started in the 80's, accidentally. Working in the hotel field, hotel guest would leave 'tips' (non US coins) for the chambermaid's service. At the same time, I would find Wheaties, not knowing what they were but found them to be interesting. When the States Quarters started I became more interested in the hobby. mila_

I first stated collecting in 1999 when the State Quarters started but that was just buying stuff from the mint. never went to a coin shop. the only coin shop I ever remember going into was back in 1985 when my parent took my brother and sister to a Baseball card shop which had a little coin area in the back. but back to 1999 me and my dad collected then together if you consider we both bought alot of the same stuff from the mint. but my dad passed away in 2002 and after he passed away I stop collecting coins to meaning memory with it. but I started back up around September of 2005 shortly after my third child was born. but I feel that is when I truly started collecting because befroe then I had no idea how many different coin and design the US had only though about modern issue stuff adn my eyes were open to a how new world of coin and I have been going strong and additicted since then with no sight of slowing down execpt maybe lack of money might a little but that is only form buying not learning and playing with what I have. one thing I did learn about a year ago I had no Idea how much my dad was into coin. I had the privlage of going through some of his stuff he had alot more then I knew. I got some of his collction but some of the other stuff my mom wanted to keep. this is a little bit off the subject but something I though kind of ironic. My Dad birthday would have been or is April 2. that is the same day that the Washington State Quarter was released and before I moved to Idaho I lived there my for most of my life and the rest of my family still lives there. just thought the one who started me on the state quaters. the state we lived in came out on his Birthday. Ok just a wired though I had. though I would share. but I would say almost 2 years I have been collecting

I started in the 70's I guess, but have taken a 30 year break only to start again early last year. I bought Renniks coin pricing book to see what my collection was worth and that has rekindled my interest now that I know their value.
I don't know why I like and collect coins, but am a hoarder of lots of things.

I started saving coins in 76 when the bicentennials came out and then I would save coins that had this odd clink noise (silver) that I'd get as tip from my paper route. And I still have the very first silver coin I received as a tip! In the 1980's I only saved mint sets. It wasn't until the early 1990's that I stopped saving stuff and started collecting and understanding the hobby.

After my father died in 1978, we found a little box with about four dozen old or unusual coins he had saved, mostly Indian cents, which my brother and I split. That started me dabbling in coin collecting, and I got a little more serious about it in 1999 with the State Quarters. I got very serious about it in 2003 when I discovered that I actually could afford to buy some nice silver and gold coins. Been hooked ever since. Jan

At the age of 10 in 1960 my uncle gave me 16 Morgan dollar & a penny book for my birthday that what started me I had a brake for 1968-1971 thanks to uncle Sam. when I got back my I gave it up for about 5-6 year and about 1976 I went back to collecting coin on and off then in 1982 my son was born and I started back full time collecting coin and to this day I still wait for the pennies to come out!

I started in the 80's when my great Grandmother gave me a bag of old silver halves and dollars. As I got into high school I stopped, but in the last year have gotten back into it. I have to give credit to forums like this and ebay for making the hobby much more accessible.

When my Dad passed away in 1969, he left me a couple of Franklins and a few Morgans. I put them away and never seriously collected until a little over a year ago. Don't ask me why, but in between, I did purchase the Statue of Liberty Commemoratives and a 1986 proof SAE from the mint. Almost hate to say it, but in January of 2006 I saw a coin show on TV, yep, one of them! It got me to ebay to see what was available and I've been hooked ever since! Tim

A few years ago, my wife started to bring back francs, and then euros, from France. She was keeping the francs in ziplocs and putting the euros in a nice album of all Euro countries. I went to buy her coins on ebay for her birthday and Christmas. In the following months of online shopping, I encountered more and more nice commemorative coins. I started buying more and more coins (less and less for her, and way more than I needed for the next 2-3 years of her birthdays!). At that time, I had to admit that it was becoming my hobby too. From commemoratives, I went to collecting canadian nickels, and then quarters and cents. And then the next step last year: taking pictures of the nicest ones and opening a web site to display and sell coins. All that in 5 years!

Wow!! Some really great stories. I'm surprised at so many responses. Well, I think I'll reveal my full story of collecting. It was August 2nd, 2006. You know how summer is, hot, boring, a lot of free time. Well, I've been thinking for a long time to organize my bin of saved circulation commemoratives. That day was really really steamy, I think it was near 100 F, or around 35 celsius. I had taken a shower and just thought let's do the coin thing now. My grandparents were visiting Canada at the time and my grandpa helped me organize everything, taught me alot. It was really nice. Then, I got hooked onto more interesting stuff, like the Canada Day Quarters. The rest is all happy times, a lot of memories and I hold a little coin show in my room every 3 months for my family. I am truly fascinated my coins and sometimes find them inspiring. They are a thing of beauty, aren't they?
