What is the best point and shoot camera with macro lens for close ups for 200 dollars or less?

someone posted about a few P&S cameras that you could either change or add on macro lenses to about a month or less ago, I will go and look and see if I can find that post Edit: This is the thread I was talking about, it may give you the information you are needing https://goccf.com/t/133998 You could look at the ones he mentioned in that thread and decide which one meets your requirements

@ reports67, I purchased a Canon A-610 through E bay after some considerable research and with the great help from members here. I was able to pick it up for $32. I must say I am overly pleased and I am still learning what the camera can do. Macro is excellent even on auto. check the others Canon's I mentioned in that old thread and maybe read up on SuperDave's thread in the photography section. https://goccf.com/t/29441&SearchTerms=canon,a720Good Luck, RK

I use a Canon SD790IS. It has a macro setting which I think rivals dedicated dSLR macro lenses. I paid only $130 for my camera at Adorama. Here's a few recent pics:

Question. Since the Canon PowerShot SD790IS is no longer available new. Has the Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS taken its place? If not what new model would be similar?

Yes--this is an older model. For a time, the SD780IS replaced it with a 12 megapixel version. They change the model names so much that I'm unsure what is the current version. I would go over to Canon's site and see which camera has a similar macro focusing distance (Macro: 1.2 in.-1.6 ft). I do notice the Canon Powershot S100 has the same macro focusing, althought the MSRP is $429. I'm sure some research will turn up a great deal--it's really an excellent camera for macros. Here's another picture I took yesterday:

Very nice pics, DVC... I probably missed the boat on a nice used Canon 790IS yesterday on ebay. I bid a max. of $65 and change. My old Canon A70 has given up on me, and I need a small camera to replace it for general picture taking. Might as will have one that takes good coin photos too! http://www.ebay.com/itm/25119954669....m1423.l2649I'll do some checking on your advice, and keep you posted. Thanks.

Ham1947, there is one on ebay right now for 48.00 BIN with free shipping. It doesn't have all the accessories with it (or at least not in the pictures) and it looks like it is used but its still there. There is also one that right now is at 41.00 and does have a memory card and stuff with it with only a couple hours to go. I sent you a link to the one that will be over soon as it has the accessories with it

Thanks for the link Bryan 1315. I'll check it out. Haven't decided if I want to purchase a new replacement or used?

Bryan1315, the Canon PowerShot ELPH 310HS (list $249) has a macro: .4" - 1.6'. That should be very good, correct? I'm going to do some shopping around to see what I can find on a lower price.

Macro distance shouldn't be a problem for just about any camera these days. The actual quality of the image can vary pretty widely by lens, though, and that's the problem. As a general rule, expect better results from cameras with a shorter zoom - long zoom lenses have inherent compromises. DVCollector's SD790, for instance, only sports a 3x zoom.

I have bought (2) different Canon PowerShot cameras on ebay. Both almost new. An A620 and a 790IS. I'm going on a vacation for about 6 weeks and will begin to experiment when I return.
