To celebrate joining LSCC I bought (actually, got in trade for some silver bullion) an 1855O Seated Liberty half dollar. Very nice coin. This one is in the older, green colored PCGS label. I was told that PCGS was even tougher on grades during this period. Not sure if this is true but I'm sure you guys can straighten this out for me wether it's fact or fiction. The reverse looks nicer than the obverse. Thanks a bunch.

I'll toss an AU58 into the ring. That's a very nice looking Seated for sure. I wanted to say MS for a second.
I've heard that coins in an old green label are usually ripe for an upgrade. I see a lot of MS63 Morgans that look MS64 and usually exceed MS63 money.(as compared to current slabs that is)

I'm calling AU53, although 55 wouldn't floor me. PCGS is generally regarded as having been tougher on grading in those days, but they've pretty much cycled back to that standard now.

Back when the old green holders were being produced they probably were a little stricter than today and many coins graded back then would probably grade higher today HOWEVER, collectors have been picking over those old green holders for 15 to 20 years now and most of the coins graded back then that would grade higher today have already been cracked out and regraded. The magority of coins still in those old holders are the ones they optimistically graded back then which would be considered to be accurately graded or even still a little optimistically graded today. For the most part the cherries have all been picked, but the myth lives on. Especially among sellers hyping their wares.

A couple areas like the head, breast, shoulder, knee, and some of the feathers are slightly flat and have a dark silver color which I think indicates wear. From the pictures, the luster that I do see is generally hugging the most protected of areas. Unless there is more luster that is not shown in the pictures, I don't think I could grade it much higher. Since you say it is in a OGH, my guess is it got graded EF-45. It could possibly grade AU-50 today.

From what I've heard, coins in the green holder were graded more conservatively than today but most of the ones that are worth getting regraded already have. It is my feeling that most of green holders still left on the market are either correctly graded, overgraded, or not worth getting regraded like the morgans mentioned by dave700x.

I would also go with AU53 (with the understanding an OGH could end up lower = EF45).

Nice!!

(Is it wrong to want every Seated Liberty half dollar I see anyone post?)

dave700x,

Funny you should bring up Morgans in older green labels. The other coin I got in this trade was a CC Morgan with the green label. I'll have this one on board to show in the very near future.

Not my series, but before seeing all of the posts, I was going to say the reverse is AU58/MS63 depending on the luster, and the obverse AU50. So, I will say 53.

Joining in I will say AU 53 based on the photographs. I have one of these coins I would call XF 45 to AU 50. Yours has a much stronger reverse strike but a lesser observe comparing to mine. A great type coin for your collection.
