Hello group, I am doing a research about the history of Latin America with respect to the silver coins of these country. There is a question about Suriname when under Dutch Administration and see you can give an idea.

When you see the national emblem of the following coin, it first appeared in the year of 1962 and not from the year of independence achieved, 1975. Do you feel odd to show a 'future' national emblem when the state is still a colony of another country? Who knows why and what had happened in the year of 1962 in Suriname? I can't find any related information to solve my question from Wikipedia? Who can give a help? Thanks, Henry

This symbol is believed to be the dating back all the way to 1683 when this symbol was used by the Dutch West-Indian Company. Already in 1954 Suriname received a special status of the Netherlands and was no longer a full colony, but a semi-independant state. In a legal document of december 8 1959, the symbol was renewed (reenstated also) as an official symbol for the country of Suriname. In 1962 it was used the first time on the coins of Suriname (that was still a colony of the Netherlands at that time).
