First off, I am very pleased with help and information provided on CCF. This website is a valuable resource for me as well as others, so Thank You again to the powers that be and everyone involved.

Now for my question, I am 51 yrs old and disabled trying to restart my collection after having to sell it off to survive for three years till the SSDI kicked in. I have an affinity to Morgans, Indian pennies and LWC's. I also have a small silver bullion stockpile. So the question is this, in order that I collect a complete Morgan set, LWC set, and Indian set before I die should I hold out as is or sacrifice grade and value to complete the sets then upgrade pieces as they become available? Or go for the best values on any and all coins I come across? The primary aim ideally is to have the completed sets for me and offer the most value to hand down to my son, who has special needs.

Also on a side note how long does it take to gather a moderate 7070 collection?

I also came back to coin collecting pretty late (after I retired) and started my collection up in the following manner:

Went after the new coins that I could collect through culling from active circulating coins. I just completed a circulating dime collection from 1965 through present (no SF mintmark) and it is up to date with the exception for a two dimes (2009 and 2010) and I was also able to get a few silver dimes while I was at it. I also started a ATB collection and a State Quarter collection (which I finished). Finished a Jefferson nickel collection that I started years ago and am working on my penny collection (started a collection for the new shield pennies.

If you are serious about starting in the collecting game anew, I'd really start with the new series (coins that you can pick up while the coins are fresh and easy to get. You can also pick up some fairly nice coins if you do roll searches.

Trying to get a collection of Morgan and Peace dollars can get rather pricey depending on what you expectations are.

Take a look at collecting the Susan B Anthony or the Sacajewa dollar coins. You can pick up nice coins by doing roll searches. The same can be true for the new Presidential dollars.

When I started back into collecting I put off getting an album until I had a better than average start on by new collections and hung mostly with roll searches. Better coins will come, but like anything else buy what you enjoy and the best that you can afford. Upgrades will happen over time. If you start off looking for the best only, you'll end up spending a small fortune and become very discouraged. This is supposed to be fun and enjoyable.

Good coins can be purchased through the mint by buying their annual sets and splitting out what you want. Determine what you budget can afford and by all means stick with it.

Welcome back to collecting. I never regretted comming back to the game. Stay tuned to this station and you'll get an education on coins.

Above all, determing where you're interests predominantly lie and keep going in that direction.

Welcome....................

Further, a 7070 set will take some time, those of us who are trying to complete the set really take their time and try for quality as much as is doable with our budget. Some of us have been working for years and then spend a lot of time doing the upgrade game.

Right now, the big issue is trying to find the album as Dansco is in the process of revamping the book.

While building a Morgan set take a few minutes to check the approximate coin values at numismedia.com. Cross check that with ebay completed sales and you will find the key and semi key date current prices. Some of them are in a soft market and good prices for quality coins can be had. Common dates are always available at current melt values plus a reasonable premium. nlp

IMO, when I do my searches for my albums....I try to find the best I can for the money I have. I'm not an MS guy but a VF will do. With that said.... I try to find the coins and add them to my collection that have the dates very visible and after my set is complete, then I will start upgrading. Not sure when that time comes if I will just make a second set or sell off the coin that has been replaced to compensate for the price of the new slot holder. But that's just the way I work....others will chime in. CHEERS!

For a set to hand down to your son the 7070 to me would be the choice. With every coin different there is so much to admire than a series set where they are all the same excepting the date and mint mark. Morgans are nice but unless you are going for a date set the complete set is unattainable for the average collector. As far as time frame that is up to you on how picky you are on your choices and the availability to pick and choose.

Fatman, I'm also returning to this at a later date and without the earning power a younger man might have. I wish acquiring coins could go faster, but that's not the case right now. But as in so many other things in life, it IS the journey that's the real pleasure. I'm also a Morgan lover and, right or wrong, I'm looking for some quality over quantity, MS64 coins. I may never complete a set, but I love what I have.
