According to Kitco, nickel closed yesterday at 22.59/lb. That is up from 3.00/lb. in the fall of 2002. Just under 5 years! If I am correct that means a nickel is worth almost 9 cents. If I am not correct please correct me. I'll bet there is some hand-wringing going on a the mint. Oh yea, just heard this week the fed is officially making it illegal to melt down coins. If you get caught you do 5 years. Translation; "that coin is worth market price to me, but it'll never be worth more than face to you."

I actually hadn't been watching nickel prices, but this is very interesting. I have found that selling Jefferson nickels (not the silver issue) has been extremely difficult. Maybe this will boost that market.

I don't follow metal prices to closely, other than silver and gold, but do know I was absolutely shocked at the prices I received for around 15 Shield nickels at my local dealer last weekend. I have had them so long, stored away, that I had no idea what they were worth. Thought I would pick up a little spending money and look for other coins I was more interested in so I was dumbfounded when my nickels brought anywhere from $18 to $100 each. Most of them brought money in the $70 range so it made sitting on them a few years very very worthwhile as I don't remember giving much money for any of them way back when! This hobby never ceases to amaze me!

Jeffersons have always been a hard sell, imho. Maybe if the metal value escalates to the point that they're meltable for a profit that will create a new market for us. Lord knows I could use some new markets...so many numismatic premiums have evaporated with the increased metal values.

From what I've seen, the Shield nickel market has been picking up. This is one of those series that seemed to be a sleeper for a long time. I am starting to see more and more of them for sale and the prices are definitely on the rise.

Glad you could benefit from this, Terry.

Don't pay much mind to the prices of the metals, but if the feds make it illegal to melt coins will you be able to get melt prices for junk silver coins? If you can't melt them then what good are the junk coins.

The statute only applies to the melting of circulating coinage so anything with silver can still be melted.
