I have started a project that I have been thinking about for quite some time. I have always loved Franklin half dollars and decided to get a complete set in MS-64 with FBL. The 53-S is a toughy at 64 so may have to settle for something in the 60 - 62 range, all the other are within my budget but will take sometime as I am going to be very very picky. Below is the first coin that I really liked so far, all will be NGC for the simplicity of storage. Paid a little over numismedia pricing but I loved this coin What are your thoughts? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1959-D-Fran...047675.l2557

It is a very nice coin and a good way to start a collection (my hubby collects FBL Franklins...or any Franklin that strikes his fancy). I think you could have paid a little less for it though, but you did not get ripped off, IMHO.
Have you taken a look at Teletrade? They have a lot of MS 64 Franklins and you can look at realized prices there as well (plus Tuesday auctions are no reserve).
I can't wait to see your next acquisition!

The ebay seller is one that resides about five miles from my house. When I go in to buy or sell he always brings up what I have purchased online and discounts from that. It is a win-win for each of us, I just didn't have the time yesterday to stop in and snag it before they closed.

In that case, you did well! Good for you developing this kind of relationship - this will help you when you get to the tougher years.

Freedom, I think its a awesome idea, I have a full set 64 FBL by PCGS..i don't have the 53- S, but I did pick a coin with almost FBL, it will be hard to get a 53-S, first they rarely show up and when they do they go for big money, also you should try and find raw coins to send in,that was fun for me..good luck...

Good luck... This is more challanging than most think. Especially for well struck and clatter free. Remember to look at the coin and not just the label (as I am sure you already know).

This is my second MS64FBL Franklin that I am adding to my collection. It arrived Christmas Eve Afternoon...... I simply love the luster this coin exhibits and the FBL designation is just icing on the cake.... My scanner is terrible when trying to copy these coins. The smudges are on the glass apparently, they are not on the coffin(s).

Great FBL Franklin and a worthwhile project. I've considered doing either FBL Franklins or Deep Cameo proof Franklins - both can get pricy, but they sure do look nice.

@Freedom- 53-S in 64? Is this something you are going to go for or have you already decided to tack down to the lower grades? Have you thought of maybe getting a MS-65 or MS-66 non-fbl for that year and get a nicer coin for the same money? or are you willing to take a less attractive coin just to get the designation.

Depends on the coin but it must have FBL. The tough year I will probably hold open until I can find one that I can afford.
