I got a couple more steel wheat backs today, and when I weighed them all were on point but one. It was 2.90 instead of 2.70. This is bugging me because it looks real and its not special or anything, so I don't know why someone would fake it.

I have 'gut' feeling that is is NOT fake, despite being outside weight specification. During WW2, everybody was busy especially in 1943. At the time this coin was struck, it is very probable that the strip from which it was punched may have missed a final pass through the roller press. During the war years, error coins from around the World are more common.

If that is the case, that makes your coin all the more interesting.

I have even seen an Australian florin, struck on a U.S. wartime nickel blank, from the SF mint.

rachums107 - Why would they replate it?
sel_69l - I can see that happening.

They get replated to give that that MS uncirculated look again. Basically like cleaning a coin to try and get more money for it

Although these don't really bring in a lot of money, they do get replated. I have a couple that are quite shiny and I suspect have been replated. On that same topic, my favorite steel cent has not been replated, is MS but has great color, similar to this cent. I'll have to post the actual coin when I get home from xmas travels.

I noticed that, when I look closer at the left wheat lines, I can see a little discrepancy. It is not worn down, but actually above the others. So, I am concluding plated.

Thanks, I thought that's why, but I didn't want to assume anything.

I would love to see it.
