Here is an odd duck that I found while going through rolls. At first I thought it was a 1943? Zinc penny, but on further examination it was dated 1982. Then I thought that maybe it missed the copper plating stage but then there was something about its size. When compared to another Lincoln Cent it is a wee bit larger, and if you look at it sideview it is a wee bit warped. If it were a high denomination or rare coin I might think counterfeit but who would counterfit a penny? My last thought that it may be a peeny struck on the planchet of a foreign coin that got mixed up in the hopper. I know this happens at the Canadian Mint, but does the U.S. Mint produce coins for other countries? I know the Philadelphia Mint produced half of Canada's 1968 dimes. Any thoughts on this one.

IMHO, it looks like it was put in a vice or something and got squeezed. Which would explain the bumps and marks on it. But, what I don't get is it is a bit thick. So I don't know for sure, but my guess right now is post mint. But that is only my opinion.

A vice wouldn't explain the lack of any copper plating though.

It is not necessarily copper-plated zinc since it is a 1982- both zinc and copper cents were made that year. Have you weighed it? 3.11g for copper, 2.5g for zinc.

I assume that since there is no copper present that if it were a true coin that it would have been a plated zinc coin that missed the plating process. The oddest part though is the size difference (You can see this in the photo of the 1993 penny ontop of the 1982) which leads me to believe that this is either a made up piece, or maybe one that was struck on a foreign planchet. Either way I will probably never know, but it makes a nice oddity to hang onto.

You cannot assume that it is not copper without weighing it. The color is wrong for it to be zinc, it is much closer to a copper/bronze color. An accurate weight could easily determine what it is or is not.

It has been messed with...it is not an error, and it didn't come from the mint that way. Exactly what DID happen to it is anybody's guess.

I'm not even convinced that it was EVER at the mint.
