I'm about to embark on my first coin treatment. I have some Verdi Care in the mail and some acetone ready for a soak.

Question: I've heard to give the coins a 'good soak' in acetone on this site. I was wondering what this means in actual time. What am I looking for in judging this.

Second, pat dry?

Third, with the Verdi Care, am I coating lightly and leaving as such or coating and pating clean?

Thanks,
Terry McManus

Acetone won't do a single thing to verdigris. If it's green, but it comes off in acetone, it's not verdigris, it's PVC goo.

Verdigris is an inorganic double salt of copper, and an organic solvent such as acetone will have zero effect on the verdigris.
If there is any pitting of the bronze beneath the verdigris, VerdiCare will not be able remove any such damage.

From other posts I have read, VerdiCare works best on modern bronze coins, where there the green is quite thin, and evenly spread. If the green has a scabby build up, the coin is almost certainly is damaged, and cannot be fixed.

I recently used acetone to remove green pvc goo off of one of my morgans. It worked very well, removing everything but the natural tarnish of it's age.
This only took about 30 min. soak. The acetone evaporates very quickly once you remove the coin from soaking. I then rinsed it with water and it is much better.
I don't know if this is the correct method as I have seen many different opinions on this matter. The more experienced guys here might be able to help a little more.
Or correct me if I'm wrong, but it worked for me.

My experience:
What acetone won't accomplish in a minute or 2, it won't accomplish if left longer.

No, let it evaporate, which it will do very quickly. Also, it is important to do a final rinse in fresh acetone to ensure nothing is left behind.
