I just started this week collecting Mercury dimes.
This is a purchase from earlier today. What is FB in coin grading? What do you guys think the grade on this one is?

FB I looked it up. Apparently this one has full bands. I really don't know what this means in relation to rarity or value yet. But since nobody has responded it must have been a numismatically naive question. I will do more research.

You hit the FBs designation on the head. She is a pretty merc. I'll let the grading experts weigh in for a numeric grade. However, you will get more responses with better photos (I can't help with that because my photo taking skills are like my budget... not very good).

Hello! Your request for a grade from third-party grader ninamason has been filled. ninamason grades this coin at VP-100, "Very Prettyyyyy!! 100". ninamason estimates value of your coin at none, just send it to me.

Okay, in all honesty as much as I love Merc dimes I have NO experience with higher-grade ones. I'd easily give this an AU, though--maybe even MS. Beautiful, beautiful!!

Thank you for your comments. I think I got really lucky on this one. I paid 11.61, Which seemed like a good deal to me for this beautiful coin. I was thinking it must be worth at least 20 dollars, but I am a novice.
I know there are many intricacies that I do not understand yet, so value is a foggy area still on most coins. I am starting to get the hang of Morgans though.

That's a pretty Merc, no doubt about it, heck I'd a bought it for $12. That's a lot said because I loathe Merc's.

With that said, I'd give it a MS63, but if it is in a SGS slab PF70!

I'll check that out tonight macmercury. I'm off to take my kids to see the Hobbit.
I am a regular coin addict now. Our fiat money systems massive problems are my enabler.

So SGS is very proud of it's coins I take it? Like an ugly kid is always beautiful to his mother?

Yes, SGS is very...."proud"....of its' coins.

In fact, you can rest assured that anything in an SGS slab graded below MS-65 is roadkill.

As for your Merc, be mindful that these are graded pretty tough. The small size gives disproportionate attention to any marks. Yours is Mint State, FB, and probably no better than 63. The prominent marks on the neck and right reverse fields preclude anything better.

Thanks SsuperDdave, I will watch out for the SGS slabs. This merc isn't slabbed, and I probably won't send it in. Thanks for your assessment.
