I was at my LCS and was looking at 1/2 dollars and there was this 1825 bust half with XF details. The reverse was really good looking but when ya looked at the date the 8 and 2 were almost completely scratched off. Now I know an XF bust half aint cheap but I asked what he would take for it he said a G-4 coin was worth 54 and he would let me have it for 50 and I was tempted but I had to walk away from that one.
I think I would rather have a holed coin( I have several) than one with a vandlized date.
BUT dangnabit it was a good lookin coin over all.

do ya think I messed up?

Your first reaction was probably right.

If you had bought it my guess is that the vandalized date would have continued to bother you and you would never end up being happy with the coin.

Find the one you like.

I would have gotten it...

I bought a damaged and worn 2 cent piece for a dime a little while ago.

Depends on whether the vandlized date was the only problem with the coin. Did it have good eye appeal and were the surfaces fairly original, if the answer is both I would have likely done the deal if I needed a 1825.

Would it look good with the rest of your collection is the question.

I try my best to maintain standards. There's the run of the mill "whatever" collection and then there's the other side that has some type of elegance to it. Both are fun.

let me put it this way I looked at the holder and he had damage listed on it so looking at it in hand nuttin jumped out at me so I flipped it over and with a 10X loupe started by looking at the reverse and the rims and didnt see a thing then I flipped it over and looked at the feilds and the bust all look nice a clean (not cleaned) and the last thing I looked at was the date and UHG!
i dont NEED this coin or this date
most of my damaged silver coins I have only paid melt/spot for this was 4x spot

Id have to see it to know what I would do, but for you I think you did the right thing. If it bothers you now it will likely bother you even more in the future. No need to buy anything you dont like or arent happy with

I think you made the right call. I don't mind worn dated coins but don't care too much for damaged ones. I think it would always bother you and you may have regretted the purchase.

I think you did the right thing. I've purchased coins that I havent been entirely happy with and it is hard to make yourself like them. I've now adopted the opinion that id rather not have a coin than have one that isn't quite what I was after. Chances are you will have to upgrade it later because the flaws will play with your mind.

It all depends on if you will regret it one way or the other. If 50 and so bucks isn't a big deal and you might regret not buying it, then you should have bought it. If 50 bucks is a big deal and you might regret spending it, then walking was the right call. No regrets.... This hobby is about fun and education or at least thats what I tell myself.

A flaw like the date partially scratched off would be to much for me to handle.
And I have low standards in coin collecting
You did the right thing
