VisigothKing Pillar of the Community United States 4778 Posts	Posted 12/22/2012 7:25 pm My first coin of him (yes my first because the Val III I acquired way back turned out to actually be an Honorius ). I was able to confirm its Val III from its reverse legend (SALVS REIPVBLICE - the L in SALVS is visible) and the left field letter (S). Only emperor with this type to have SALVS REIP and the S in left is Valentinian III. It looks decent enough for a coin of this period but hopefully it will look a little better in hand (even looks like it may clean up a little). Valentinian III (425-455 AD) Obv: DN PLA VALENTINIANVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev: SALVS REIPVBLICE, Victory advancing left and holding wreath and palm branch, RM in ex, Rome mint, RIC X 2108, rated Scarce Minted between 425-430 AD, 11 mm Report this Post to the Staff

To the untrained eye this piece looks rather insignificant, small and crusty with few detail. To the trained eye, a fabulous piece-scarce, with a glimpse into the end times of a once great empire on its last legs. Kudos on your find-keep'em coming.
