"Attempts to undermine the legitimate currency of this country are simply a unique form of domestic terrorism," U.S. Attorney Tompkins said in announcing the verdict.

After reading this post, I had to see what the coin looked like so I'm posting a picture of it. Hard to imagine anyone taking it for real currency.

Um, yes, it's been discussed before on the forum, a great many times. Just do a forum search for "norfed" or "nothaus" or "liberty dollar" (exact phrase) and you'll find dozens of threads. Quote: Hard to imagine anyone taking it for real currency. But some people could - and some people did. Von NotHaus did his cause no end of harm when he appeared on a Discovery Channel documentary on money, and went up to some poor unsuspecting hot dog vendor and bought a hot dog with one of his coins - without telling her it was actually a coin he made himself in his basement. (Yes, yes, I know, they were actually made by Sunshine Mint, not in his basement. But they might as well have been, as far as their being "real money you could take to the bank" was concerned).
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Thanks for the photo Fatman, that is a really nice looking coin. I wouldn't mind having one.

I love the coins, and the idea behind them. The fact that the government felt threatened enough to shut it down is telling.

I cannot believe that some people are actually supporting this guy. He is a fraudster. Full stop. What if every tin-pot alley manufacturer started producing their own coins and passed them off as real? All it would take is the mere whiff of the idea that the American people are so gullible as to allow the real culprits (and I mean the Chinese) to get a foothold in the door.

I love them... So region currencies that are bills are all right but tokens (especially PM tokens) are not? That's why I support him... don't say one way is legal but the other way is not... That's just wrong... Either tokens and bills are allowed or neither are allowed is my stance! @Penny Guy

I'm with you Windchild. It's an informal bartering token, "worth what someone will pay for it" to paraphrase the makers. Beautiful coins, and much nicer than any post-Peace Dollar US Dollar.

Umm... I have to disagree with the "much nicer than any post-peace US dollar"
Should be "much nicer than any presidential US coin other than Ike!"

This was a threat to the Federal Reserve system and less so The United States. Civil War tokens circulated along sing U.S. coins during the Civil War without any objection. Many other tokens by Saloons, Mines, and merchants have also circulated without objection. This one was an attempt to hit the bankers that really rule this country and they couldn't have that.

Quote: Hard to imagine anyone taking it for real currency. doesn't have to be taken as US Mint currency to have the same effect. If people started using it and taking it as their own currency it would have the same affect of devaluing the US money

Why did the man have to put the words dollar and liberty on the coin? Why couldn't he just put the weight and purity of the coin and quote the daily silver price?
