I went to my local dealer today to buy some uncleaned ancient coins... Unfortuently he sold out of small batches of uncleaned ancients and only had large (50+ coin per batch) batches left... After looking through ancients for an hour or so... I picked up a few Mauryan Empire Punchmarked Coins... Coin 1: I believe that the punchmarks are: Other than the three leaves on the middle punchmark, they look right. Coin 2: My only problem is that I have to ID both coins... Can anyone help me with websites to ID thems or a good book to ID them (on a YN budget)? Thanks!

#2 also Ashoka but Mitchiner 4173-4174 I think. The problem here is the symbol at the lower right. If the Mitchiner number I gave is correct, the symbol includes a turtle which is off flan in yours and unclear in both coins illustrated by Mitchiner. This is my best guess.

Thanks Doug! I had guess that they were both Ashoka but that was as far as I had gotten.

Michael Mitchiner, Oriental Coins and their Values - the Ancient and Classical World 600BC-AD 650 http://www.amazon.com/Oriental-Coin...600BC-ad+650I bought this when in was in print and high priced (it is a huge book with 760 large pages and thousands of photos). Now it is out of print and really obscenely priced.

I may have found one that will go a little lower... like >$500.. At a little Canadian auction One sold a few months ago for $450 including tax, premium, etc. Now I just need to talk my dad into buying it... Always the hard part..

Wow they are expensive! Even if they went out of print, I'm surprised! The one you listed doug was $900!

Amazon used is the worst place to buy a rare book and a great place to buy a common one. They do not plan to sell it for $900 but are willing to if you are silly enough. The book was about $300 new and has many faults but there is nothing really better for what it covers. It shows many very low grade coins and is not easy to use. I don't recommend spending more on the book than you have spent on coins contained in it.
