I recently cracked a roll of the 2000 Harmony 25-cents, and this single coin caught my attention. Any ideas what is going on with her nose? This is definitely not supposed to be like this, and since this feature is only on the nose (i.e., the devices), it cannot be a die clash.

It might be a die chip . A little piece of die broke away in that area .

Do die chips commonly occur within the devices?

Hello SPP-Ottawa

Have you considered that the chromium layer can be left (wear) at this place on the working die?

I have several nickel dollars with the chrome die plating flaked off (like a mortar set), the edges are usually ragged, and there is never this much relief with that type of error. Look in the 67th Charlton, in the nickel dollar variety section, for 1986.

So far, the best I can think of is a piece of scrap nickel fell on the die, and into the nose area of the die (remember the devices are incuse on the die). Then, a regular planchet enters the striking chamber and the coin is struck with extra metal attached. If it was a die chip or something, then I should have more than one in a mint box...

If that is not what happened, then the mystery continues...

On the 5c of the 2000 - 2009 range there is a lot of extra metal that shows up, usually on the letters but sometimes on the queen's chin, in varying amounts. I always though it was just a plating irregularity, as it's fairly common. Could this be something similar?
