I seen that we have a local club in Panama City FL called Silver Sands Coin Club seems to meet once a month and put on a coin show once a year. Should I join something like this since I am new to coin collecting?

I'd at least check it out before getting committed to joining. Then make your decision to join or not.

The best thing that I ever did was to join my local coin club. After the business meetings (2x monthly) they have an auction and a raffle. They also have a coin show which is heavily advertised and one a year they have a dinner (free to members after a full year of membership).

The auctions are a good way to build up a collection, usually at a price that is a little cheaper than going to my local coin shop. I can get silver usually without a heavy shop premium.

Check out a couple of meetings and see what transpires. My club posts their bi-weekly auction online prior to the sale and a person can determine what they want to bid on and make decisions at home without having to make a rushed decision at the night of the auction.

My club does not have a memberhip requirement to purchase raffle tickets or to bid at their auctions. It's basically what you want to do. I joined and am not sorry that I did.

Check it out and you decide. My club meets about 2 miles from my house so it is convenient. I'm there and back home within an hour and don't miss much family time.

By the way, welcome - stick around to the forum, ask questions and if you feel comfortable put your piece into the mix. We don't bite. The water's fine, it's a little warmer water where I am that where you are.
Rest in Peace

I would strongly recomend any coin collector join their local club. Our local club welcomes collectors to come to a meeting as a guest and can then join at the next meeting if they are interested. Our meetings consist of a short business meeting and then we do a show and tell before having a formal educational program. We have a yearly coin show to support our club. Dues are usually very low. Ours are $10 per year with a small initiation fee the first year. Check out the local club and let us know what you find.

yogurt,
" Should I join something like this since I am new to coin collecting? "
That is precisely why you should join a local club. Collectors love to share their experiences
with newcomers to the hobby.
Before the Internet and the CCF, a local coin club was the only way to network. If you are
fortunate to have a club in your area you should at least check it out.
Both Internet and face-to-face contacts will serve you well as you continue your interest in coins.

Wow thanks for the reply's! This is what I was looking for in answers. I will try to get up with someone from the club before attending just so I don't walk in and not know anyone. I will let everyone know how it goes as soon as I attend a meeting.

I'm the VP of our local club and I would suggest you check it out and then decide. A beginner can get a lot of good info from a club. Most clubs try to be educational in nature and there are usually a couple experts that are available for advice and opinions. Most also have small auctions and sales and can also be a great place to sell your own extra items. They are generally inexpensive to join and if you use their resources can be very helpful and informative.

There are goods and bads to joining a local coin club. Sort of like having coin, stamp, gun magazines delivered to your house with a mail box where things stick out. IF you live in a decent community where crime is not prevelant, a coin club can really be a benifit. They are places where you get to know people that know coins. And in some clubs they have methods of getting discounts, have coin shows, can loan or give you books on coins. Some members may even give out old or no longer needed or wanted coin Albums. Yes in a nice, crime free area a coin club can really be great.
Now the bad side. If you live in an area of high crime, to start with if you do join a coin club, do not give out your real name, address, phone number, etc. Parking near the place can also be good or bad. To close and people in the area see your car and license number. A GPS can be easily placed on your car. Parking to far can also be a danger since you could be followed from the club. You don't know the people in the club so any of them could be there just to find out who has what.
Todays large crime rates warrants caution.

Went to my second meeting tonight! I joined the club it was just a small $10 fee for the year. They were asking for someone to give a presentation at the next meeting so I volunteered. Anyone one have a suggestion on what to speak about? They said it could be about 15 to 20mins long.

That's easy. Just talk about what you expect to get by joining a coin club. Discuss what you think are the pros and cons of a coin club. Make suggestions on what you think would increase membership. Being new I wouldn't discuss how many coins you have or what their values are. Just to play safe.

yogurt ... consider a presentation on counterfeits. CCF member SteveCaruso has put together a great database.

I wouldn't think he would mind but to be safe you could PM him.

They are going to LOVE you, someone who volunteers! You'll be an officer in no time.

Seriously, if they have educational presentations you've probably got a good club there.

Thanks guys. I talked to the president and he is going to give me the month of April meeting. He said a older member wanted to teach us about finding errors and show examples. I will have plenty of time to put mine together I am liking the idea of what coin clubs should be about and what we should be getting out of the club.
