As some of you may know I help out some friends that run an estate sale company. They started a new estate about a week ago. As usual they had me come by to help them set up tables & move furniture before they started digging through cabinets & closets.

I noticed a few coin books laying on top of a desk in one of the bedrooms. I also noticed over a dozen empty lock boxes in the same room. We all assumed that the heirs cleaned out the coins before turning the sale over. That tends to happen a lot, heirs pull readily saleable items & take them to the cash for gold places.

Yesterday I was helping out at a different sale. One of the owners walked up & showed me a 1991 1/10th Eagle he had found in a closet at the first sale. We talked about how cool it would be if there were other coins hidden away. When I woke up this morning there was a voice mail on my cell. It was the owner telling me they found a box of coins, including proof sets, dimes, quarters, silver dollars, etc. I'm heading over there in a few minutes to take my first look at the collection. The people I work with don't know a lot about coins so it could be all modern but I'm pretty excited anyway.

I've got another appoinment in an hour so I didn't have a bunch of time to sort things out. The collection completely filled a Xerox paper box. Probably half of the box was filled with proof sets dated 1980-2000. There was a baggie filled with change, a small box of modern foreign coins & a bunch of bicentennial quarters, halves & dollars. There was also a small handfull of older junk silver & several modern coins & replicas in the cheesy packaging you see on HSN.

The rest of the box was full of various modern mint products in OGP. These included some silver eagles, a few premier proof sets, a couple silver proof sets & some modern silver dollars. My quick & dirty estimate puts the value of these somewhere north of $750.

At this point I haven't figured out an exact value nor what I can pay. I'm a collector, but dealing in coins/antiques is how I make about half of what I live on. I can't pay retail. My policy is to pay as much as I possibly can & still make a reasonable return on my investment of time & money.

Here's something ya'll might find interesting. The items I buy are generally the more expensive items. In this area these will not sell for retail at an estate sale. The more modern mint sets will sell at the sale for about what they would sell for at a brick & mortar store. Anything like that is sold at the estate sale to maximize the heirs profit.
