Ok so I was just wanting to get peoples opinions on buying supposidly unsearched shotgun wheat rolls on ebay. Is this an ok gamble or are most of these scams and they have already been searched. Are there particular sellers yall buy from?

They are searched. Stay away from the seeded ends (ones with IHCs, or silver dimes on the end of the rolls). Would someone really think all these rolls were accicently created with a 1909-S on the end, and no one botherd to look for the VDB? Buying bulk wheats is ok, just don't overpay or expect miracles.

Years ago I used to buy the Wheat cent rolls and lots. I rather enjoyed searching through them too. I would think that most sellers have picked through them and took the gems. However, there still may be some out there that really haven't been searched. If you can get it at a low enough price, it may be fun and help you fill some holes. If you plan on purchasing from ebay, check the feedback first. This may be a good indicator either way.

I would advise against it. About 3 months ago I answered an ad on craigslist for a person buying wheat cents at 3 cents each which is slightly higher than my dealer pays. I met with him and sold him $155 face in wheats to buy a coin I was interested in. I told him they were all 1940 up and no S mints. He didn't care. He said he puts them in a large water jug saving them for his children. Then about 2 weeks later I was talking to my dealer and told him about the sale. He laughed and said he knows who the person was describing him perfectly. It turns out the guy just rolls them up ad sells them on ebay as unsearched wheat rolls. He says even though they are searched before he gets them he doesn't look through them so they are unsearched. So I would say most of the rolls on ebay are put together rolls falsely claimed as unserched. The ones that are really unsearched (which is a stretch) are like the rolls above.

In another thread based on this same question a few months ago, somebody responded by saying "There is no such thing as unsearched."
I don't remember who said that, but somebody out there has a genuine way with words.

Sure there are unsearched rolls. I recently scored 56 rolls of wheats at the credit union, the only roll I searched was the solid roll of 1955's. I really don't have the desire or time to search the rest, and am preparing to throw them on ePay or C-list.

There is no way a solid date roll can be thought of as unsearched. That is obviously a put together roll. The rolls were just put together by someone before you.

I understand. I suppose it all depends on one's definition of "searched".

@pyrbob---I've read a lot of stories, thoughts, feelings, opinions (including some heated stuff) about searched vs "unsearched" rolls of wheaties here in CCF. Out of everything I've read, I have to give the 2012 CCF Best Of Show Award to your anecdote about the lying guy who bought all your pre-searched 40's/50's wheaties so he could sell them on ebay as "unsearched" because HE hadn't searched them. That is one genuinely precious ebay story if there ever was one. Best wishes for the new year and please keep the belly laughs coming in 2013.

Save your money and buy what you are looking for. Most of these people are liars and frauds and know exactly what is in these rolls. But of course they post a picture of an 1877 Indian head at the end of a roll- right before they take it back out and put it back in their collection.

Ive actually bought the rolls you all are talking about.. I look at it this way.. I collect wheats. IH and Mercury dimes, So If I see someone selling a roll of wheats wth IH and MErc ends at a good price then I buy it. I've found great coins this way. I found 4 IH and 2 Mercury dimes in a roll and only paid about 10 dollars for it, it averages out in my opinion. you just have to know who to get them from. Even if they are searched the person ususally will put key/semi key dates just to have you buy more. I buy the rolls that describe dates and mints usually.

IMHO " unsearched" is a red flag...highly suspect in my book.

I actually bought 2 rolls. Each roll had 48 wheats and 2 indian head. They were $6 a roll. I probably paid too much but I actually got several coins I needed, especially the S mint so I am actuay very satisfied with my purchase. Plus I really love my pennies so the Indian heads were a nice bonus.
