Hey all,

Its been awhile since I've posted here, but I've still managed to keep up my collecting while in Australia. Anyway, I'm back for the holidays and I'm still working on completing my 1889 year set. My goal is all the coins from each mint, including the gold.

My question to you is this: I am working on the half dollar and the quarter. I'll be at the FUN show in January (for my birthday!) but I am unsure what I should be realistically paying for these two coins. I was at a show in VA not to long ago, and a dealer wanted $1,000 dollars for an AU 51 half dollar and $450 for a vg10 one. I had to walk away, but part of me is wondering if I should have pulled the trigger. Is there a chance that I can find a better deal in Florida?

Some other good news though: I bought a 1811 bust half about a month ago, and it had massive die cracks running all over the coin. It turns out that it was an O-112a. It was probably only in ag3, but I payed $90 dollars for it! I sent it out to be graded and the guy said it could also have die clashes, so I am anxiously waiting to get it back . Anyway, thanks for the help,

Jon

Both of those prices for the 1889 were overpriced. $1,000 will almost get you an MS63 from recent sales.

Oh wow! Glad I didn't pull the trigger! I'm trying to get in xf 45 range. Should I be aiming for about $400 to $500 dollars?

There are some dates where you have to throw out the price guides because they are just plain hard to find in high grade. The 1889 half dollar had a mintage of 12,000 pieces which is very low and then how many have survived. Here's a link to a dealer I know and have bought many coins from who has a nice one and his prices are usually very reasonable. Here is his description of the coin "Near AU details, bright white surfaces from a most likely dipping. Definite mint state striking." Here is the page http://www.typecoins.com/store/product?pid=75662 If you do buy it and then don't like it in hand he will take the coin back.

He also has a very nice CAC stickered NGC Proof 63 1889 half.

I'm going to go ahead and do my broken-record thing here.

If you haven't registered at Heritage Auctions yet, do so. Their sale archive is free, and it's my standard reference for what people are paying for coins.

Thanks for the link! You are definitely right when you say they are hard to find. He was the only dealer at two shows to have the coin. I may have to end up and go over the book.

And I just registered at the site :) Thanks for the idea!

Any other advice for this year?

1889 is a low mintage late date. As such, their survivorship is relatively large, but their actual mintage is quite low. These coins have a very high basal value and in F12 can be approximately $500. However, they also have a flat price structure so that an AU50 might be $900. If the AU50 half dollar was really nice and choice then it wasn't all that bad a deal at $1,000 even if you can get a lesser nice one for a little less money. The quarters follow a similar price structure.

What puzzles me quite often is when collectors refuse to pay up a small bit for really nice coins and then lament that it took them forever to find the piece, yet they walk away when the difference in money is small. The fact that it takes one forever to find something is an important hint as to how difficult it might truly be to find.
Rest in Peace

My Grandfather was born in 1889 - and I have put together a set of MS coins
[ missing the 89-CC Dollar and about 2/3 of the Gold.]
The Proof set is complete and its probably one of my
favorite sets within my collection. Here is my Proof Dime:
Help-With-My-1889-Year-Set

I'll be at FUN [ table 1053 ] and although I won't
have my personal collection with me - I'd love
to be able to meet you and maybe chat with
you awhile about your collecting goals.

Hope you stop by to say Hi.

Mike
