Hello, can somebody help me to understand metals for 2 type of Australian 50 Cents ? - km# 257 Year of the family - km# 364 Bass & Flinders anniversary I found these as silver coins reading KM catalogue, but looking at the coins they don't look like a silver coin but much more as copper-nickel. Thanks a lot.

Shame Bigfella, a Maccas? It means nothing to most people out side of Australia.
Rosso, what bigfella was referring to was "The Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes by Greg McDonald 14th edition.
It is available from coin dealers or direct from Greg. Bigfella could probably sell you one.
Between 1969 and 1999, all circulation and collector set 50 cent coins were Cupro Nickel except for the 1988 Bicentenary and 1991 25 years of Decimal Currency 50 cent pieces which were issued in Cupro Nickel and in the Masterpieces in Silver sets in Proof Sterling Silver.
From 2000, many 50 cent issues had a Proof Pure Silver collectors' issue either individually cased or as part of the Fine Silver Year Sets (2003-2007) as well as their Cupro Nickel counterpart.
Again the exception here was the 2003 50th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. A gold looking Aluminium Bronze coin was issued in a Stamp & Coin Cover (PNC) and a Pure Silver Proof coin was issued in a case.
Many recent issues of commemorative 50 cent coins have not been released for circulation and are collectors issues only.
Hope this helps. Wayne

Thanks Scooba,
I was referring to 50 cent issues for their year of issue.
You are correct that in 1989, RAM issued past commemorative 50 cent coins (1970, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1988) as Sterling Silver proof issues dated 1989 with the then current Raphael Maklouf effigy of QE2 in a Masterpieces in Silver Set. They indeed look great in silver proof and should be considered for any 50 cent collection.
Cheers

Something Italian and coin related as a swap. What mules do you have on your coins and are they expensive?

Rosso_rubino, did you ever get your copy of Maccas? I have a spare edition from 2001 if that's of any use to you. Let me know.

I have the 13th edition, and think I bought it from Bigfella. It's a great book.
