Well, I usually have a pretty level head when it comes to buying coins but for whatever reason today I decided to bid on some coins I know little about (Alexandria) and have no clue as to value! I bought the following: Somehow I've managed to never own a 4th century Tet and been meaning to get a few and having seen some other members giant Ptolemys recently I wanted to get one of those also. I'm guessing the Tets are worth about £5 ($8) each, maybe the nicest one £10 ($15)? I've not attributed yet, in truth I wanted some as I need the practice I have no idea what the Ptolemys are so any help welcome, please educate me, they look about 35-40mm but no dims or weights were offered. They were bought from a respected European seller. What are they worth? Wont tell you what I spent but suspect I may have gone over the top a little. Edited by bobbyhelmet 12/28/2012 3:02 pm

Very nice coins Bobby, I don't own any Ptolemys but hope to some day. I have a few of the smaller Alexandria tets of Carus, Carinus, and Numerian and like this type. I believe the first one is Severus Alexander and the last might be Claudius II, but I'm not at all sure.

Thanks echizento, I've wanted some Alexandria tets for a while but never got round to it. Looking around the web the Ptolemys could weigh in at around 60gs each

I have repeatedly refused really nice Gordian III tets at $100 but consider them the top end of the small, late ones. The ones shown strike me as $25+ for Diocletian (this is well struck for these) and $10 for the others. The big guys are condition times weight. 90 grams fine and better are premium. 40g. corroded and poorly struck are not hard to find. We can't say anything here without weights.

The Tetradrachm in the first photo, bottom right, seems to still have some silvering on it.

Thanks for the replies, starting to think I prob did OK price-wise. I'm having a typically hard time IDing them to a level I'm happy with, as soon as Greek is involved I'm useless but I'm enjoying being in an area I know little about, kind of exciting. Doug, could the Diocletian be year 3 with a star over a poorly formed Gamma in right field and just ЄTOYC to the left Quote: We can't say anything here without weights Shame, wont have them in hand for at least a week. Quote: The Tetradrachm in the first photo, bottom right, seems to still have some silvering on it Certainly hope so

These arrived today, the first Ptolemy came in at 45.9gs and the second at 31.4gs. They measure 37mm and 34mm respectively, they are really rather attractive. The 3rd century Tets are much chunkier than I expected also. I have another two Ptolemies and another 4 Tets in the post and on their way to me for next week as well
