Just wondering where are the best places to look for coins? Also good deals on coins? I'm Pretty big on the Silver coins, pre 1964. I'm a collector on a budget, keep in mind. Would like to hear from some of the Old time collectors here. Share something Inspirational with me

Speaking silver and budget in the same sentence spells Mercury dimes.

Yes! Actually those are my favorite coin, its funny you say that. I have managed to collect about 12 mercury's thus far. I have yet to find any Barber dime's but I find those interesting as well. I bought some nickels a few days ago thinking 16 of them were silver War Nickels but they happened to be of no silver content. I have ALOT of wheat pennies as well. just no key dates yet!

Mercury dimes are a good place to begin, with a nice design and low prices. It should be easy to get the entire set except for the 1916-D, 1921, 1921-D, and 1926-S for 3 or 4 bucks each, unless you want only MS examples. That'll set you back a bit. Here's a bit of advice: buy a RedBook before spending a dime on coins, if you don't already have one. You don't want to get ripped off. If you can, find a couple more books on the coins you want to collect. And if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Good luck!

I do not have a Red Book but I will take the advice given and buy one soon. Yes those key dates you mention, I have seen them sell for quite a sum of money so I doubt Ill be getting any of those for a while, but I do plan on getting it there little by little, thanks for the advice! :)

Thats awesome. We actually have a few flea markets here and I've got silver jewelry at discount and made money off of it, selling to a smelter I know. But I've never checked for coins, I may check at the local flea markets next week. You ever had any decent finds there?

Set a budget for adding to your collection and stick to it.
When you have a spare $10, see if you can pickup a silver quarter and a couple silver dimes.

Buffalo nickels would be fun and relatively "cheap" to assemble a set. The design is a very unique design, and allows for some interesting wear.

@bookshelf- yeah thats pretty much what I've tried to do lately, I've bought the wheat rolls with silver dime ends every week or two and accumulated a good bit of wheats and mercs that way. @basbal yeah ebay is where I got kinda ripped on those nickels I posted about the other day but you can find decent deals if you look hard enough, but it is so easy to make rookie mistakes lol and hippie I'm not much into the buffalo's, I do have a few and I would never turn any down if found or given to me, but all in all its not my favorite coin. Thanks again for all the wonderful suggestions community!! very much appreciated!

Theres definitely bad sellers on ebay just like theres bad coin shops. For high value stuff I stick to slabbed and other times ill stick with sellers I've dealt with before. Sometimes Ill make a test purchase to see how they are before making larger ones

Yeah I agree and like I say it was partly my fault when I got kinda took.. I didnt realize that allll 1942 nickels werent silver until recently.. but the guy put 41's and (42's) just like that to make you assume it was silver nickels.. so me being the newb I am I jumped on it.. boy oh boy would it have been a sweet deal.. lol I shouldve known! haha

Unless the seller SAYS silver nickels, they are not. That's not the seller, that's all on you. Regardless, it sounds like you have a pretty good game plan. Aside from the Red Book you may also want to get a subscription to Coin World and then you can access their value catalog. They are closer to reasonable pricing than Red Book.

John, I am going to recommend an ebay seller to you: szvarady. He's an older man selling off a 60+ years collection, and he's: --reliable --a great communicator --very inexpensive I've greatly expanded my world coin set through him (his coins are beautiful; if anything, his photos do them an injustice) and he posts something like four Mercs a week, all in a set. (These will be for less than melt to start with, too--I usually see him start the lot of four at $6.99.) I consider him "my dealer" even though he's not a dealer per se; for a beginner, he's great!

Also Ninamason thanks for the input I will def. check on the ebay seller you mention, that sounds like a great starting price on mercury's. I've been trying to find a good, reliable, fair seller there. Thank you all so much for the suggestions!
