Hi.
Was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about a coin I found in a chubb security coinroll. It is a 2010 $2 coin that is silver in colour,
Thanks
Darren

Hi DarrenM

Can you post a picture to help us work out why the coin is silver in colour?

Will post proper pictures later on tonight when I get a proper camera. As you can see my mobile photos are too blurry to see anything from. I was just throwing the question out there to see if any information out there about this coin was common knowledge

There was a 2010 fine silver set but they were all minted in proof finish. Even from the very blurry pictures it doesn't seem like yours is a proof coin. It might just be circuleted in which case better pictures will help. Is it thinner than a normal $2? it might be a different planchet. I think the most likely thing is that someone has plated it with a silver metal.

The true silver version of the coin would weigh 8.55g rather than the usual 6.60g for the circulating version. Looking forward to some better photos...

Have weighed it and it is the same weight as a normal $2. Enworb's most likely right about it being plated somehow...Will post pics tomorrow

Its not a proof finish so its not out of the masterpieces set. Most likely plated I think.

I would guess nickel plated.
Have a very close look over the entire coin with a powerful jeweler's loupe.
If it was suspended in a plating solution, the contact points from where it was suspended may show up unplated.

You know how you often see coins on ebay (mostly 50c pieces) gold plated? Maybe someone was thinking of silver plating to cash in on people's stupidity and start silver plating the gold coins and when they realised was dud idea threw em into the wild.
