I have an opportunity to buy some Aussie decimal banknotes, but need your opinion on what you think they are worth and what I should pay or offer. The seller is asking $100 the lot plus $10 postage. These notes are not in a auction, they're from a private seller at his house in Brisbane. They consist of:

Two dollars x 4 paper notes (from circulation), included:
1 Knight/ Stone 1979
3 Johnston/Fraser 1985

Two dollars x 1 paper note (uncirculated)
Johnston/ Fraser 1985

One dollar x 3 paper notes (uncirculated)
Knight/Stone 1979

One dollar x 2 consecutive paper notes (uncirculated)
Knight/Stone 1979 prefix:

One dollar x 3 consecutive paper notes (uncirculated)
Johnston/Stone 1982

One dollar x 8 paper notes (uncirculated but with very small creases)
Included: 1 Knight/Wheeler 1976
6 Knight/Stone 1979
1 Johnston/Stone 1982

Considering if his grading is somewhat accurate. Does Anyone think $100 plus $10 postage is a good buy?

Assuming the grading is accurate those notes have a book value of about $200. So $100 is a reasonable price as long as you can be confidant that the uncirculated notes are truely uncirculated.

Thats the problem with buying notes on ebay or from private sellers. You can't tell from a photo whether the notes are uncirculated.

I have been burnt a few times so now I only buy notes from trusted sellers or where I can see them in hand before I hand over the cash.

Dosh,

As a rough guide, in assessing whether a particular purchase is worthwhile, I always down grade by one grade and take 60% of that value to determine whether a note is worth purchasing.

The reason for this is that strictly uncirculated notes are difficult to come by, as there is usually evidence of teller flicks or other handling marks on paper notes.

Using the latest Mackas as a guide you have the following:

4 x $2 from circulation = $8 face value

1 x $2 Johnston Fraser aUNC x 60% = $6 x 0.6 = $3.60

3 x $1 Knight Stone aUNC x 60% = 3 x $10 x 0.6 = $18

2 x $1 Knight Stone aUNC x 60% = 2 x $12 x 0.6 = $15 (small allowance for consecutive)

3 x $1 Johnston Stone aUNC x 60% = 3 x $4 x 0.6 = $10 (small allowance for consecutive

1 x $1 Knight Wheeler aUNC x 60% = 1 x $25 x 0.6 = $15

6 x $1 Knight Stone aUNC x 60% = 6 x $10 x 0.6 = $36

1 x $1 Johnston Stone aUNC x 60% = 1 x $4 x 0.6 = $2

Grand Total $107

In other words, the asking price is about correct - whether you want these notes all depends on whether you need them for your collection - but don't expect to make a profit if you attempt to resell them soon.

Of course, this assumes that you have checked and they are NOT first or last prefixes on these notes.

My thoughts on the matter - take them at face value!

Cheers

I would pass too.

It depends on how you're building your set. What you're looking to collect. It is a nice sized lot. 21 notes.. It's a starting point. But it is up to you?

Everyone has their own passion as collectors.
