my 5 year old son was given a healthy handful of world coins. we spent some time digging through them with the Krause book. there were several none western coins mixed in with the European, Caribbean, and South American coins. most of the coins were decent but not worth selling.

it took a few minutes to identify the none western coins; one was Egyptian and the other Iranian. the difficult part of the Iranian was reading the date. the Krause book had the Persian numbers and the corrected calendar dates listed for the coins. it was really fun finding the coin in the book.

i had my son try and point out the locations on a map of the various coin origins. it was fun for both of us. I spent about an hour putting the coins in 2x2's for him once he had gone to bed. he was excited to find them in holders the next day.

who knew that the junk pile was so much fun to dig through.

Steve, it sounds like a start of an "OFEC" collection (one from each country). It's a fun and non-expensive way to learn about coins from different countries. Most can be found in dealers' junk boxes for 3/$1 :) You could have a world map with pins for the countries you've found, etc.

Cheers!

excellent suggestion - I'm into ham radio and we already have a map with countries he's talked to - this gives would add another dimension to the fun. my poor son is going to know more about the world and geography than most of his teachers. I'm willing to take that risk ;)

My son (8 yrs old) and I do the same thing. I buy a few pounds of foreign coins at a time and we sort through them. I trade some away with other collectors for coins we don't have from time to time, but haven't figured out what I'm going to do with all the others yet.
