I once had a complete 144 set [ plus the two Norse Medals ]
and I have been slowly rebuilding another set.

Here is a nicely toned 1892 - care to guess the grade ?

It's a really nice coin but I just don't have the eye to tell the grade with that amount of toning.

I'll venture a guess however, just to see how I do against the real experts.

I'll go with MS63.

I love it! That type of toning is often found on MS65 examples, but I will go with MS64 because I think there may be too much chatter in the hair.

Wish you had given us more than 2 hours to read the thread ... before posting the answer ... but that's OK.

I was going to reply as follows ..

Newer PCGS 3-prong holder ... so applying current PCGS standards the graders there recognize all the obverse chatter and in particular the many hits on the cheek/jaw.

The reverse is so deeply toned that your photo does not help elucidate any issues ...

IMHO the pure technical grade based on obverse hits is MS63 ... however the PCGS graders will appreciate the toning ... and give it a grade of PCGS MS64.

I see that is the answer ... nice coin.

Hoping to offer whatever support we can as you re-build this tremendous set of coins.

I was going with MS63. My vote probably isn't fair because I stay away from toning. I purchased a toned coin but had to return it. Maybe my taste will age (tone).
