I know that this is a coin website, but I figure someone can help answer this question. Currently Silver is around $31.00 an ounce. I am thinking about buying a 5 ounce silver bar. Here is the question: Silver towne currently charges $169.30 for a 5 troy ounce silver bar with free shipping APMEX currently charges $305.90 for a 5 troy ounce Johnson Matthey Silver bar Question: Does it matter who makes the Silver bar to determine value. I own a few Stagecoach Silvertown 1 ounce bar's and wonder if there even worth spot. Any suggestions on this. Thanks and happy new year!!

Some older bars are more popular with collectors and will have a premium over spot but a silver bar will always have at least spot value.

When you get into JM and Engelhard you pay premiums. When you get into the same bars but poured not stamped...you bay a really big premium. A silver bar is always worth spot. Check out the precious metals section here on CCF. Many old bar threads have been running around there the last few weeks.

As said above.... collector-prized, high-premium = J-M and Engelhard brands and poured bars in general. I think also that 5oz bars tend to cost a bit more per oz than 10oz bars.
But...if you want to stack silver inexpensively, I think you'll find better prices on 10oz extruded/stamped bars. No classy collector-prized provenance there---just plain silver--period. Little gets cheaper than the bar prices offered by Goldmart, but also check out any local coin shops or shows where you live.
That having been said, I confess I've recently started stacking older extruded/stamped Engelhard bars. In another year, I'll probably have moved all the way over into the even older poured Engelhard bars. As the old saying goes, "Go figure..." At any rate---happy hunting, happy shopping, and happy stacking!

If it is 5 oz bars you are after maybe take a look at the bullion version of the America the Beautiful 5 oz coins. In the bullion form they don't carry a large premium. For example silver is around $30.50 and they are selling for $178. There are 5 different versions produced each year to match the quarters.
This may be different all over, but my LCS will not pay me as much per oz for generic bars. They only pay spot for name brand bars and coins. You may need to shop around to get spot.

@tpg22---You're right! My thinking was so bar-focused I didn't even think of the 5oz ATB's. They have a moderate premium and they trade back in a whole lot better than bars do. They're probably the superior vehicle in the 5oz silver class.

I don't have any and I haven't seen any @ shows or LCS's, but I've been in lust with all the Monarch poured bars since I first saw their website. They put out almost every known size bar and they must be close to the only manufacturer still putting out poured bars.

Has anyone ever ordered from Monarch? They have 6 oz and 12 oz Silver Eagles and some neat looking bars.

I've ordered from them without any issues this past summer. Recently I had a order in my shopping cart that they jacked the price of up right before I submitted the order. It was for the 1 gram gold rounds they make. They'd increased the price of them by $5 (not spot price driven). I was livid, but I think it was just bad timing on my part. That increase was a deal breaker for me though . . . I notice that Monarch and APMEX inventory has been taking a real big hit this week based on items I'm looking to purchase pretty much vanishing before my very eyes before I can pull the trigger on the shopping cart order submission pages.

I'm lucky... my dad agreed to pay for any increase in cost until I can order the bar So I can wait until they have them in stock...

They have the added benefit of being made by the mint too

No, as a rule I never sell what I accumulate, although I have considered buying a few gold coins I know I can flip for a profit here and there. I love Monarch poured bars, but I don't think they command a premium on resale like JM and Engelhard bars do. Maybe in a few decades . . .
