I was browsing at Morgan silver dollars, and a dollar slabbed in a holder by NGC and listed as a Binion Collection Morgan caught my eye. What exactly is this collection, and is there something special about it? I am considering making an offer, but would like to know more.
Rest in Peace

The Binion collection is more like a hoard. I see a lot of average Morgans with this label on the holder. Not much of a premium if any at all in my opinion.

Here's the low down...

Set Description
The Binion Hoard â€" This is probably the most famous of all hoards and comes from the estate of Las Vegas legendary Binion heir Ted Binion. There has been a movie made about Ted (Sex and Lies in Sin City: The Ted Binion Scandal), a couple of books written (Murder in Sin City by Jeff German and An Early Grave by Gary C. King,), and a Court TV documentary. After his death, the Binion Hoard was found in a 12-foot deep vault built in the desert on a piece of property Ted owned in Pahrump, Nevada 60 miles southwest of Las Vegas and include Peace and Morgan silver dollars, silver half dollars, quarters and dimes. NGC is the authenticating service that adds an extra layer of security for both grading and authentication.

Originally, this set consisted of the rare date / mintmark silver dollars found in the Binion Hoard that have been GRADED and AUTHENTICATED by NGC with numeric gradings. The population report figures come from NGC publications; however, NGC does not publish population reports for 'BU" labeled Binion silver dollars. I shy away from coins that simply contain the "BU" grading, but sometimes I break this rule because of the rarity of the coin.

Dave - thanks for the details. The coin shop I visit in central Texas has 2 or 3 Binion Morgans for sale. I've wondered.

This is kind of a long read but it tells the tale well.

Small world, I happened to pick up a Binion 1923-s Peace dollar on Monday. I picked it up with the intention of breaking it out to add to my folder (there was no premium for the Binion label). But after reading about it online, I think I will leave it alone for now as a neat little piece of history.

Plus it gives me an excuse to buy another Peace dollar for my folder.

Ted Binion owned Binion's Horseshoe Casino on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. It was renowned for its Million Dollar Display which consisted of 100 $10,000 notes in a glass case.
