So, my son wants to start an Indian Head cent collection. Is this a collection that is feasible for a decent price. We are only looking at the F to VF range for all of the coins. Basically as long as the date and the subject are clear enough to depict he will be happy. What is about the average price that we would be looking at per coin and what coins am I going to break the bank over?

RES, to the CCF. Your son has picked my favorite US coin series to collect. In that condition, most of the coins will be reasonably priced. As Windchild has indicated, there will be a few that are expensive, even in the lower grades. Please tell your son good luck w/ his collection

It really depends what a "decent" price to you is? Most can be obtained for a pretty low price in those grades, except the 3 noted (the 1877's gonna be up there though.. Even in a really low grade it might, well probably will cost more than all the other commons put together.. That's an empty hole in many albums, lol) Check out different price guides as a reference, although those prices tend to be a bit high... But at least it will give you an idea of the dates you will be paying a "pretty penny" for.. In VF a few other dates could go above $100, maybe even $200 depending on where you buy.. To see real world prices today, I'd recommend you check out completed ebay listings... IMO that gives you the actual market value and shows what they're actually selling for, or more so what people are buying them for.. Great set to collect! I hope your son enjoys it! & I love the idea that its something you want to work on together!! (If you don't mind me asking how old is your son?) Keep us posted on your progress, we LOVE pics

The one interested in IHCs is 7. My oldest is 9, but he prefers the English pennies and half pennies. That seems like it will be a good hobby collection for the two of us to work on. The remaining three may be for when he gets his first job. :)

Very very cool! That's awesome that you can do this with them! The 1908s isn't too bad.. About the same as the 1866-1868 (maybe $60-$100 +/-) there are a few others that might go above that.. The highest will be the 1877, followed by the 1909s then the 1869-1873 (which could be between $200-$300+ in the grades you listed) again, I'd recommend checking ebay. I could be forgetting/missing a few off the top of my head though.. But as long as you can do it together and have fun doing it then that's all that matters.. It can be a lifelong project you can do together, fill empty holes as you can or buy lower grades and upgrade as you can, we all do it.. Lol, for the harder more expensive dates you can put half of his allowance away for a year.. J/K...

By some of those prices it may be an allowance for a year or two.

Quote: as long as the date and the subject are clear enough to depict he will be happy That actually describes a coin in grade 'good' which would bring a lot of those mid range coins (1869-1873) out of the $300 range to $30-$90 dollar range. Fine to very fine coins for these years are pricey. Actually most of the years 1878 and earlier are not cheap in F-VF. "G" coins however are abundant and a lot cheaper; Except for the key's ('77&'09s) and maybe 1872 which is kind of tough in all grades. Probably my favorite set and I commend you for bringing your son into it

it is definitely feasible and as Upstate points out, an IHC in good condition will have a clear date with clear devices. I am currently working on this set and have set my focus of my entire collecting around this set. I am also really interested in the varieties there in this set as many are really neat. I have most of the "easy" ones and a few more challenging ones. I am currently working on the 1877 now, looking for a G to VG example. Anyways, good luck with the set and it should be fun as you can fill a lot of holes quickly and relatively inexpensively.

Lol, ya definitely allowance for a year or two I also agree with David & upstate.. A "good" grade IHC will have a legible date and devices, Just no "liberty" will be visible in the headband.. And as the prices get up there for F-VF's a set of G's would be just fine, IMHO at least a full set in any grade is still something to be very proud of! And I think it's more important that you are doing this together with your son opposed to the grade of the coins.. And you can always get the commons in higher grades and get the more rare dates in a grade you can afford more easily without going broke, or having him save allowance for years, lol. And as mentioned you can always upgrade later if you want... Or he can... Lol

The set is fine to work on as the coins are always available. However, the price level will be too much for a seven-year old if the goal is to complete the collection. The set is long enough that there will be plenty of relatively affordable coins that can be added over time to give a sense of accomplishment, but at a certain point there will be more expensive pieces. Take your time, buy nice coins, avoid corrosion or dark spots, do not buy previously cleaned pieces and enjoy yourself.

I don't know why this thing just started posting multiples. I don't even see the multiple posts. Funny I work on computers for a living and they hate me. I guess the very good is were we want to be. The Liberty needs to show on the coin. (My OCD coming through.) We do already have a couple of the cheaps knocked out. My last trip to the states I bought a couple a 1906 in AU and a 1896 in VF. So we have at least a bit of a start. Plus a couple more shipping from the bay now. I guess that we are committed now.
